Durango Arts Center to host satire lecture

Judith Reynolds will give the Life-Long Learning Lecture Series presentation “How Dare You? What Happens When Satire is Seen as Sacrilege?” at 3 p.m. Thursday, at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

Reynolds will talk about the challenges to free speech and Western values, discuss current political cartoons and place protest art in history.

The presentation is free and open to everyone.

Dorothy Gore Scholarship available to senior girls

The Dorothy Gore Scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CS is available to any La Plata County graduating senior girl with academic promise, leadership potential and at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.

This $1,000 scholarship honors Dorothy Gore, a retired, longtime Durango teacher.

All applicants to an academic college are considered, although priority is given to applicants to Cottey College, a four-year women’s college in Nevada, Missouri, owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Applications for the scholarship are available at high school counseling offices. The deadline is March 23.

Winter Wonderland program scheduled at Seed Studio

A Winter Wonderland Workshop for children ages 6 to 12 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Seed Studio in Room 114 at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.

Class size is limited to 10 students. The class is noncompetitive, and all abilities are welcome. The cost is $80.

Adult center will offer Spanish, Nepali classes

The Durango Adult Education Center will hold beginning conversation classes in Spanish and Nepali starting Feb. 1.

Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings at the center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301.

The Spanish class will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 1 to March 9. The Nepali class will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 1 to March 23.

The cost of either class is $175. Advance registration is required.

Colorado press group offers journalism scholarships

As many as four college scholarships and two high school scholarships are available through the Colorado Press Association’s scholarship program, which is run by the Denver Foundation.

Up to four $2,500 scholarship awards will be awarded through a competitive selection process for the 2016-17 academic year. The deadline to apply is March 7.

College students who meet all of these criteria are encouraged to apply:

A full-time junior or senior (minimum 12 credits/semester) at a four-year Colorado college or university in the fall of 2016.

A major in journalism or a media-related field (e.g. multimedia, technical journalism, documentary filmmaking, media studies, mass communications, etc.).

Planning to begin a journalism or media career after graduation.

High school students who meet these criteria are encouraged to apply:

Will graduate from a Colorado high school in the spring of 2016.

Have held at least one leadership position (e.g. editor, president, treasurer, etc.) in a student media organization such as the high school newspaper, yearbook or media club during senior year.

Will attend an accredited four-year college or university in Colorado in the fall of 2016.

Durango Public Library offers online tutoring

Durango Public Library is offering live, online tutoring for K-12 students from Tutor.com from 3 to 10 p.m. every day. Spanish speaking tutors are available.

Students may connect with a tutor from any computer or device with Internet access by signing in with a Durango Public Library card.

Students can get help with homework, test preparation, skills and concepts they are learning in class, as well as standardized test preparation and college entrance exams. Subjects include math, science, English, social studies and writing.

Methodist Thrift Shop to provide scholarship

The Methodist Thrift Shop Board is offering a scholarship.

Applicants are considered on church involvement, leadership, community service, extracurricular activities and personal attributes.

Applications are available at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at local high school counselors’ offices in January.

The application deadline is March 15.

Durango announces school bus cancellations

Because of driver shortages, the Durango School District will cancel one bus route per day on a rolling schedule.

Here is the schedule of upcoming cancellations: FM4 on Wednesday; FR1 on Thursday; FR2 on Friday; JC1 on Tuesday; RJ1 on Jan. 27; SS1 on Jan. 28; SS2 on Jan. 29.

Durango School District invites you to budget talks

During the next three months, Durango School District 9-R will hold public budget discussions around the district to solicit public comment about how to manage budget priorities.

A meeting, which will provide a detailed overview of the budget and current spending practices, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller Middle School.

All schools in Durango School District 9-R will be closed Monday for professional development.

Schools will resume their normal schedules Tuesday.

Conference for boys is seeking volunteers

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its third annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to transition to high school.

The boys will explore topics around healthy relationships, positive self-image and advocacy.

Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 5.

Columbine school students celebrate cultural diversity

Students at Columbine Christian School last week celebrated the cultures and traditions of other countries, including eating ethnic foods, games, arts and crafts, music and more.

Zap! Science Planning Club to meet at Bayfield library

The Pine River Library’s Zap! Science Planning Club meets monthly to discuss the Zap! Science corner in the children’s section and science programming for all ages on days when school is out.

The club’s first meeting will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Imagination Room of the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

People interested in supporting and promoting science excitement are encouraged to join the club for these events.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School will host these events:

Crystal Pennington’s Spanish 3 students will exhibit original artwork inspired by Chicano, Latin American and Spanish poets and artists from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sweet 11 Art Gallery, 863½ Main Ave. All are welcome to view the artwork and speak with students in English and Spanish about the impact of these literary and visual artists.

A professional development day for staff will be held Monday. There will not be school for students.

A team of AHS teachers will compete in the Snowdown Spellebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. AHS families are encouraged to support the team.

All students and families interested in learning about AHS and enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an information session and to sign up for a shadow day. The first information session will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at AHS. Information sessions also will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 27 at the library; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 9 at AHS.
