AHS families are invited to a presentation called “Know the Facts: Teen Vaping and E-Cigarette Use,” a conversation with Sloan Skinner from San Juan Basin Health Department and school counselor Arava Geva from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at AHS, 20091 U.S. Highway 160.
Matt Dooley’s ninth-grade humanities classes will give an exhibition called “Why Books?” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. In response to their study of the novel Fahrenheit 451, students have created artwork in a variety of media designed to provoke consideration of the role of literature in society. The School Excellence Committee will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at AHS.
All students and families interested in learning about AHS and potentially enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an AHS information session and to sign up for a shadow day. The next information session will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at AHS. Additional sessions are scheduled for March 21, April 14 and May 3. Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year is now open. All new families with students who will be entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade next fall are invited to complete an enrollment form online at http://animashighschool.com/online-intent-to-enroll-form. If there are more students who complete the form than available spots for a particular grade, AHS will hold a lottery March 18. Retirement association offers $1,000 scholarship
The Colorado School and Public Employees Retirement Association announces a $1,000 scholarship from the Birnadine Mack Foundation to be awarded to one recipient in Southwest Colorado.
The scholarship will go to aid all active school employees in their pursuit of further education.
Current school employees are eligible to apply. Applications must be returned by March 25.

Student exchange program looking for host families
World Heritage Student Exchange Programs is now looking for American families to host high school students from various parts of the world, including Latvia, Ukraine, Poland, Egypt, Jordan, Ghana and Germany.
These students have received scholarships through the U.S. State Department sponsored programs. Scholarship recipients will spend an academic year in the U.S.

Training will address how to restrain students
Disability Law Colorado will present a free training about rules that apply when a child is restrained in school. The training will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. March 22 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
The free training is recommended to all parents/guardians of children with disabilities.
The training will focus on the legal requirements of school districts regarding seclusion and physical restraint. The training will include a question-and-answer session.
Interpretation services can be provided. Participants should make sure to include their interpretation or other accommodation needs when registering for the training.

School District 9-R invites you to budget meetings
Durango School District 9-R is seeking community comments about its 2016-17 budget.
Two community budget sessions will be held: from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane; and from 6 to 8 p.m. March 17 at Miller Middle School, 2608 Junction St.
Failure Fair will award scholarships to risk-takers
The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver is accepting submissions for their annual Failure Fair scholarship, a $10,000 award for a college-bound senior whose project submission demonstrates creative risk-taking.
This scholarship is not just for artists. It’s an alternative scholarship program for students who might not fall into traditional award categories.
The Failure Fair was created in recognition of artists who often face the risk of failing when putting forth something new into the world.
Scholarship awards range from $500 to $10,000 and will be presented to winners who have demonstrated a willingness to risk failure in the pursuit of creative expression.
Entrants are required to be college-bound high school seniors in Colorado. The application deadline is March 20.

Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s Day party
The annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Elementary School, 75 County Road 218.
Dinner will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 students and free to kids 5 and younger.
Tickets to Leprechaun Land, which gives kids games to play, are $5.

Miller Middle to celebrate fundraising at Angel Games
The Miller Angel Games will be held Monday.
The fundraising efforts of students and corporate sponsors will be celebrated.
State and local funding does not cover the entire cost of providing students a rich and diverse educational experience at Miller.
The school requests that all students ask friends, family and neighbors for donations.

Miller students will go to science fair in Fort Collins
Several Miller Middle School seventh-graders were chosen at the San Juan BOCES Regional Science Fair to represent Southwest Colorado at the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair in Fort Collins from April 7 to April 9.
The students are: Paul Knight, Sofia Bader, Izzy Washburn, Georgia Mynatt, Bailey Freeman, Eliot Wright, Sydney DeLacey and Aiden Quayle.
Middle school raises $825 for ‘Pennies for Patients’
The Miller Middle School Student Council organized a penny drive and dance to benefit “Pennies for Patients,” an organization that supports the families of patients with leukemia or lymphoma.
Overall, the Miller community raised more than $825.
In addition, the Student Council continued promoting the “Box Tops for Education” drive to raise money for the school. The seventh grade won the competition.
Finally, the Student Council sponsored Spirit Week, working in collaboration with the Gay Straight Alliance Club on Rainbow Day.
Florida Mesa Elementary parents, teachers to meet
Florida Mesa Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization will meet from 8 to 9 a.m. March 17 at the school.
Durango High School to stage ‘Legally Blonde’
“Legally Blonde the Musical” will be performed at 7 p.m. at Durango High School on these dates: Friday, Saturday, March 17, 18, 19, 25 and 26.
The cost is $10 for the general public and $5 for students.

District 9-R announces kindergarten enrollment
In April, Durango School District 9-R elementary schools will register preschool and kindergarten students for the 2016-17 school year.
At each school, registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dates are:
Riverview Elementary School: April 6.
Animas Valley Elementary School: April 7.
Sunnyside Elementary School: April 12.
Park Elementary School: April 14.
Needham Elementary School: April 18.
Florida Mesa Elementary School: April 20.
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School: April 21.
Parents/guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate and immunization information as well as a utility bill or other verification of home address.
If parents/guardians cannot attend their school’s registration day, they should call the school or call 247-5411.
