Student exchange program seeking hosts
World Heritage Student Exchange program, a public benefit organization, is seeking local host families for high school boys and girls from Spain, Germany, Thailand, Norway, China, France, Russia, countries that were part of the former Soviet Union, Denmark, Italy, Sweden and others.
Host families are asked to include the student as a member of their family. People can choose a student for a semester or for the full school year.
Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Jayde Mitchell named to dean’s list at Berklee
Berklee College of Music in Boston announces that Jayde Mitchell of Bayfield has earned placement on the dean’s list for the spring semester of the 2013 academic year.
To be eligible for this honor, a full-time student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or above and a part-time student must achieve a GPA of 3.6 or above.

Taylor Moore named to president’s list
Taylor Moore was named to the president’s list for her 4.0 at Northeastern Jr. College in Sterling for the 2012-13 school year.
She is an ambassador at the college and an active peer mentor for the San Juan Basin heath clinic.
She is the daughter of Jimmer and Melody Moore of Durango.
Brandon Little receives LPEA scholarship
Brandon Little, a graduate of Durango High School, is a new recipient of the John Voelker Memorial Scholarship presented by La Plata Electric Association for vocational-technical school or junior college education.
LPEA’s John Voelker Memorial Scholarship, $10,000 for two years, remembers former LPEA board member John Voelker, who died in the Egyptian Air plane crash in October of 1999.
A soccer player who is actively involved in FFA and 4-H, Little will study diesel mechanics at WyoTech in Laramie, Wyo., and is looking forward to a career working on heavy diesel equipment.
Money for the scholarship comes from LPEA’s unclaimed capital credits.
One of the original 2013 Voelker Scholarship winners, Seumus McAliney, opted to attend a four-year institution, which disqualified him for the vocational scholarship, and thus opened the opportunity to Little.

Lindsay Davis earns doctorate in psychology
Lindsay Michelle Davis earned a doctorate in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, Sacramento, Calif., on May 31.
Davis is the daughter of Michael and Leslie Davis and was a 2003 graduate of Durango High School and a 2006 graduate of Fort Lewis College.
She will relocate to Brisbane, Australia, to advance her career.
Mountain Middle School seeks board members
Mountain Middle School, Durango’s free, state-chartered, project-based-learning middle school, is seeking two volunteers to join its board of directors and fill the positions of board secretary and chairperson of the marketing and public-relations committee.
Secretary candidates should possess organizational and time-management skills. Duties include preparing board agenda and packets for meetings, taking meeting minutes, organizing school policy manuals and other required public documentation.
Training will be provided. Chairperson of the marketing committee should demonstrate oral and written communication skills, understanding of marketing and local media outlets and the ability to write press releases and marketing materials. Volunteer hours on the board count toward lottery free enrollment for future students.

Durango Boy Scouts to attend summit in W. Va.
Four members from Durango’s Boy Scout Troop 501 are attending the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree at The Summit in West Virginia along with 40,000 other scouts from across the U.S.
The Scouts are Sam Coleman, age 15; Matthew McLaughlin, age 15; Sean McLaughlin, age 17; and Philip Wiley, age 15.
They arrived on the East Coast on July 10 for five days of touring Valley Forge and Gettysburg. Pa., and Washington D.C. museums, monuments and special services at Arlington National Cemetery. They arrived at the Jamboree Monday for nine days of activities.
Coleman is the son of Janice and Richard Coleman. Matthew and Sean are the sons of Vicki and Michael McLaughlin and Wiley is the son of Michele and Phil Wiley.
Mary Micikas earns nursing degree at Emory
Mary Micikas of Durango, received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at its 168th commencement ceremony May 13.
Conservation Corps to offer day-camp program
The Southwest Conservation Corps is partnering with the Old Fort at Hesperus and Twin Buttes to run a day camp program for youth ages 8-11.
Participants can attend camp at Twin Buttes Aug. 5-9 to learn more about local sustainable agriculture, as well as issues unique to the region all while spending time outdoors.

FLC to offer program for high school students
The Fort Lewis College and the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County will offer a three-day program for local high school students called “Future Leaders of Colorado at Fort Lewis College Summer Program” from July 24 to 26.
The camp is designed to encourage confidence and reduce barriers for students to attend college.
Students will participate in a variety of activities that will increase their knowledge of the college admissions process and set in motion the preparatory work of finding and applying to institutions of higher education. This program will serve high school students who are members of the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County.

Mandatory Parent Orientation Nights will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College on these dates: Ninth grade, Aug. 6; 10th grade, Aug. 8; 11th grade, Aug. 13 and 12th grade, Aug. 15. Parent’s should bring their son or daughter. During this event attendees will have an opportunity to meet AHS faculty and staff members; learn about the College Counseling Department and curriculum; review AHS policies and procedures; and more. If parents have more than one student, they should attend each appropriate event because some information will be grade-specific.
