9-R school board seeking candidates
The Durango 9-R School District is seeking candidates to run for six of seven board seats, set to open at the end of the current term.
To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector and a resident of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election, and a current resident of the director district that he or she may represent.
No one can serve on the school board who has been convicted of an offense against a child.
Elected school board members must have a broad view of the district, be nonpartisan and possess immediate skills and knowledge about kindergarten to 12th-grade education.
Applications are available starting today at the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St. All applications and petitions must be submitted by Aug. 30.

9-R announces first day of school, registration
The first day of school for Durango School District 9-R is scheduled for Aug. 19, which also is an early release day.
Early release days have moved to Mondays for the 2013-14 school year. Child care options are available on early release days with the elementary schools’ after-school program, Kids Camp. For more information, call Audra Snow at 247-5411.
While registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, all schools will hold an official registration day Thursday.

Animas High School announces programs
Animas High School announces these events:
Parents should attend these mandatory parent-orientation nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 130 of Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College: 10th grade, Thursday; 11th grade, Tuesday; and 12th grade, Aug. 15. Parents should bring their son or daughter with them. During the events, people will have an opportunity to meet faculty and staff members, learn about the College Counseling Department and curriculum and review AHS policies and procedures. Parents with more than one student at AHS should try to attend each appropriate event as some information will be grade-specific.
The Back to School Picnic will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the gazebo at Rotary Park. Ninth-grade parents should bring appetizers or salads; 10th- and 11th-grade parents a main dish; and 12th-grade parents desserts. Participants will meet advisers and teachers and hear from Head of School Jake Lauer.
eSchool accepting new students
The Southwest Colorado eSchool, an accredited regional, diploma-granting online high school serving Southwest Colorado, is accepting new students in grades seven to 12 for the fall of 2013.
Students can be full-time, part-time or supplemental.

Ignacio school board seeking candidates
The Ignacio School District Board of Education is seeking the nomination of candidates for directors for the Nov. 5 school board election.
Two directors will be elected for a term of four years. To qualify, a candidate must have been a registered elector in the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election.
A person is ineligible to run if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.
Candidates must file a written notice of intention and a nomination petition signed by at least 25 eligible electors who are registered to vote in the regular school election.
Nomination petitions may be obtained at the Ignacio School District Administration Office, 315 Ignacio St., beginning today.
Office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Completed petitions should be submitted to the administration office no later than 4 p.m. Aug. 29.
The Liberty School announces programs
A Big Picture film about dyslexia will be shown at 11 a.m. Saturday, with entertainment starting at 10 a.m. and a panel discussion about dyslexia beginning at noon at Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
A $10 donation is suggested, all are welcome. The Liberty School’s baseline testing for all students will be held Aug. 14, 15 and 19. A mandatory family potluck and information night will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 22.
People should bring school supplies to the potluck.
The first day of school will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 26.
All students are going to Cross Bar X and should bring a swimsuit, towel, sunblock, lunch, walking shoes and water bottle.
Mountain Middle accepting enrollments
Mountain Middle School currently has openings for the upcoming school year.

Pyramid Plus training to be offered
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County announces an upcoming Pyramid Plus Training beginning Sept. 19.
Pyramid Plus curriculum embeds evidence-based practices into the Pyramid Model framework for promoting social-emotional competence and addressing challenging behavior. Early childhood administrators, coaches, trainers, teachers, child care providers, mental-health consultants, early intervention providers and other health professionals are encouraged to register.
Center directors are encouraged to attend with classroom teachers. The registration deadline is Sept. 6.

Free clinic to offer legal resources
A free, online Legal Resources Clinic will be available to the public from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Durango Adult Education Computer Lab in the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio, No. 301.
For people who cannot afford an attorney or people who wish to educate themselves about legal issues, the clinic will help them navigate websites to access free information.
These sites offer webinars, answers to frequently asked questions, articles, forms, online preparation of legal forms and sites in languages other than English.
The clinic is limited to 14 participants. This program is co-sponsored by the 6th Judicial Access to Justice Committee, the 6th Judicial Self-Help Center, and Durango Adult Education.

Taylor Hotter earns academic dean’s list
Durango resident and Azusa Pacific University student Taylor Hotter made the academic dean’s list at the university.
Hotter was honored for a grade-point average of 3.5 or better during the spring semester.
Lutheran preschool accepting applications
St. Paul’s Lutheran Preschool is currently accepting applications for its 2013 fall preschool classes.
