Infant, toddler care training begins Jan. 20
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County will offer a local Expanding Quality in Infant/Toddler Care Training Program.
This 48-hour Colorado Department of Human Services-approved training will begin Jan. 20 and end May 11. All classes will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at the Early Childhood Council Training Center. The cost is $40.
Travel stipends and substitute support are available to qualified participants. Providers from La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan counties are welcome.

Durango Arts Center offers ‘school’s out’ camps
The Durango Arts Center announces its “School’s Out Winter Camps,” offering two sessions of “Imagination Magic: Fairy Houses & Fairy Tales with Sandra Butler” for children ages 6 to 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Dec. 28.
Each session costs $50 for center members and $65 for nonmembers.
Butler has kids design and build their own fairy, elf or mini-being house complete with furniture and art. The camp applies imagination to guide children in constructing fantasy creatures with storytelling.

Youth leadership camp available through LPEA
La Plata Electric Association invites high school juniors to participate in the Colorado Electric Education Institute Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp – an all-expenses paid educational/leadership camp set for July 17-22 at Glen Eden Resort outside of Steamboat Springs.
The deadline for application is Jan. 6.
LPEA will host an informational open house for people with questions about the camp and the application process from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the cooperative’s headquarters, 45 Stewart St.
LPEA will sponsor up to four high school juniors, one from each school district within its service territory (Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs). All area high school juniors who receive their electric power from LPEA are eligible to participate, including home-schooled students.
To be considered, students must complete the leadership camp application and submit it to LPEA, along with a 500-word essay reflecting the student’s personal perspective on leadership.
Applicants should have a strong academic record, be interested in enhancing their leadership potential and have an interest in meeting new people.

Florida Mesa Elementary announces events

Lori Smith’s second-grade class is collecting new pajamas and books for kids in need in the community. Donations are due Wednesday.
The student council has adopted a family from the Project Merry Christmas Program and is seeking donations. The council is collecting new children’s clothing, toys and books. The council will also provide the family with a holiday meal and will be accepting food donations.
Park Elementary to hold holiday program Thursday
Park Elementary School will host its annual holiday program at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Park Café.
The program will feature third-grade students and Park orchestra students.
Durango Education Fair will be held Jan. 14
The third annual Durango Education Fair featuring schools from the Durango community will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom.

Riverview students to give annual Winter Concert
Riverview Elementary School’s choir and orchestra will perform its annual Winter Concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Riverview Eagle Theatre.

Durango School District to offer discipline workshop
Durango School District 9-R will host the Kagan workshop “Win-Win Discipline” on Jan. 23.
This one-day workshop helps educators develop discipline solutions where students and teachers win. Participants will learn how to identify the four types of disruptive behavior, recognize the seven positions from which they spring and what to do in the moment of disruption.
Educators from surrounding districts are invited to participate.

All AHS students will deliver individually scheduled Presentations of Learning through Friday. POLs are polished, professional presentations each student is required to give before a panel of peers, teachers and community members. Students’ schedules will vary, depending on when they present and when they panel for others.

Instrument Discovery Day lets students explore
Music in the Mountains, in partnership with Katzin Music and Fort Lewis College, will offer Instrument Discovery Day on Jan. 16 at the Roshong Recital Hall inside Jones Hall on the Fort Lewis College campus.
This is a free event available to students of all ages (primarily third- to sixth-graders), and offers a chance to try various brass, string, woodwind and percussion instruments. A morning and afternoon session will be offered.

Pathways to Independence to wrap gifts for donation
Pathways to Independence, a Durango School District 9-R Program for students ages 18 to 21 who are transitioning from high school into an independent life, will wrap Christmas gifts through Friday.
Pathways will accept donations to raise money for adaptive skiing. People may bring gifts to the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio, Room 315, and students will wrap the gifts within a day or two.
