Title VII families invited to Fall Feast

Title VII Native American Families are invited to a Fall Feast from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Title VII will provide the turkeys, dessert and drinks. Participants should bring mashed potatoes, stuffing and veggies. A short blessing and presentation called “Gratitude within Indigenous Cultures” by Kenneth Frost will take place. There also will be a demonstration by Dancing Earth Indigenous Contemporary Dance Creations. Child care will be provided.

Mountain Middle to exhibit projects

The Mountain Middle School sixth-grade math/science class will exhibit “Bridging the Gap,” a project focused on the structural engineering elements of bridge design from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom in the Student Union.

Topics will include forces, tension and compression.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

A ninth-grade humanities public exhibition will be held from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. today at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. Students will present handcrafted masks and personal essays as part of their “Socialization and Identity” project.

There will be no classes at AHS on Tuesday because it is a professional development day. Animas High School students also will not have school Monday in observance of Columbus Day.

Student-led conferences will be held Oct. 15. Through the conferences students use their digital portfolios to lead a focused dialogue with their parents/guardians and teachers.

DHS to host college planning meeting

Durango High School will host a college planning meeting called “How to Prepare for College and Beyond” from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the DHS library.

Freshmen and sophomores will learn what they can do now to prepare for their future. Participants will discuss what colleges look for, local resources and tips and tricks to succeed in school and beyond.

9-R school board to meet Oct. 21

The next Durango School District 9-R School Board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in the board room at the 9-R administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

The school highlights will be Fort Lewis Mesa and Park elementary schools.

Candidate forum to focus on education

The Durango Education Foundation will host a candidates’ forum focusing on education, with state Rep. Mike McLachlan and candidate and former state Rep. J. Paul Brown from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

The forum will run from 6:15 to 7 p.m. with time afterward for people to speak with the candidates informally.

Accountability group invites participation

The Durango High School Accountability Committee is responsible for ensuring that school budgets, spending, safety and academic performance is the best it can be.

The committee reviews budgets and student data to ensure procedures benefit all students. The meetings are held in the DHS library and are scheduled monthly, usually the first Thursday of the month, with the exception of October, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Upcoming meetings will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, Dec. 4, Jan. 8, Feb. 5, March 5, April 2 and May 7.

Sunnyside to host Halloween carnival

The 31st annual Sunnyside Elementary School Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25.

There will be glow golf, a book walk, haunted house and a bake sale.

DHS AVID team to raise money

The Durango High School AVID team will raise money from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Durango Wendy’s.

Money raised will help the students visit colleges around the Four Corners. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-prep program for students who may not typically be seen as college-bound.

Escalante fundraiser to benefit hungry

Escalante Middle School will host its fifth annual “Empty Bowls” dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The idea behind Empty Bowls is for participants to create ceramic bowls and serve a simple meal of soup and bread to raise money for a hunger-fighting cause.

The cost for the dinner is a suggested $5, which will include a student’s bowl. All proceeds will be donated to the Durango Food Bank. People may pre-purchase their student’s bowl. In addition to bowls created by the Escalante students, bowls will be available by various local artists through a silent auction.

Miller to host forum Oct. 22

Miller Middle School will host the parent forum “How to Guide Your Middle Schooler in the World of Social Media” at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 in the library.

The forum will be led by social media expert, Randy Parker. Parker has experience in the world of technology. He was formerly a manager of digital production at Walt Disney Feature Animation. He started his own business in Durango creating Web-based educational software for children, and he has taught digital media classes to middle schoolers. He currently works as the director of marketing at StoneAge Tools.

Durango Gifted & Talented After-School Enrichment Classes will begin Tuesday and will run for six weeks. Classes will include:

Druidawn Creative Writing Club for sixth to eighth grades will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Second to fifth grades will meet at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Acting for kids for second- to fifth-graders will take place at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Sixth- to eighth-graders will meet at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

World of Mythology for grades four to eight will be held at 2:45 p.m. Monday.

Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program for grades five to 12 will meet at 3:45 p.m. Monday.

Photography for third- to eighth-graders will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Engineering for third- to fifth-graders will meet at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The school will host its sixth annual Dyslexic Hall of Fame at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. Tickets can be purchased at www.thelibertyschool.org or by calling 385-4834. All proceeds will provide scholarships for dyslexic students in the community.
