Elementary schools to host open houses

Elementary schools in Durango School District 9-R will offer a chance to meet teachers, tour the building and bring in school supplies from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday.

Teachers will be there and classrooms will be available to drop off supplies.

Families of Park Elementary School may tour the school and meet teachers from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

School district 9-R schools to open Monday

The first day of school for the 2014-15 academic year will be Monday for all schools in Durango School District 9-R.

It also will be an early release day, as all Mondays will be this year.

Enrollment is available for home-schooling program

Open enrollment for Pine River Community Learning Center’s home-schooling enrichment program will be available at the center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday to Aug. 28.

The center offers classes, field trips, tutoring and standardized testing for home-schooling families. New this year, families will receive a $200 stipend for each student enrolled and regularly attending.

Back to School Night and an additional enrollment opportunity is planned for 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28.

Families considering home schooling are welcome. Pizza will be served. The center is at 535 Candelaria Drive in Ignacio.

Durango school board to meet Tuesday

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

International exchange program seeks host families

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking host families for international high school boys and girls.

These students are 15 to 18 years old and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester.

The exchange students travel from their home country and return at the end of the school year or semester.

Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities.

The students are well screened and qualified by ASSE. Families can choose their students from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and personal interests.

Ballet Folklorico accepting members

Ballet Folklorico de Durango will begin new youth and college/adult classes in September, and the educational dance group is now accepting new members.

Dancers and families will host an open house and registration event from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Fort Lewis College’s El Centro de Muchos Colores Hispano Resource Center.

Classes for youth ages 5-17 will begin from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at El Centro, which is on the ground floor of the FLC student union.

Adult community members or FLC students are invited to join the Ballet Folklorico de Durango Club, which meets from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at El Centro.

Financial assistance is available. All dancers need to participate in fundraising activities to supplement the program costs.

The dance group is available to book performances in the Four Corners for a suggested donation of $50 to $100.

St. Columba School to host Mass, potluck

St. Columba School will hold its annual Back to School Mass and Potluck at 5 p.m. Saturday.

All families are encouraged to attend. The School Ministry Advisory Council will provide the main course.

Participants with a last name beginning with A to F should bring a side dish, fruit or veggies; G to O desserts; and P to Z appetizers.

GED, ESL fall classes to begin Sept. 2

The Durango Education Center will start fall GED and ESL classes Sept. 2.

Fall registration will be held during the day from Monday to Aug. 28, and evening registration will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Aug. 28. New students are encouraged to stop in during the day to pick up and complete paperwork. Returning students can complete paperwork during the evening hours.

GED classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. ESL classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Thursday and from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Animas High School to begin classes Thursday

With student orientation activities complete, Animas High School classes will begin Thursday for all students.

All families of returning students are required to attend the Returning Parent Orientation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday on campus.

Important new information about the lunch program, laptop-loaner program, transportation and more will be shared, and families will be asked to complete several forms.

The catered lunch program and bus transportation to and from Durango High School will begin Monday.

The school’s board of directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
