Chandler Jeep to play at Carnegie Hall

Chandler Jeep, an eighth-grade student at Escalante Middle School, has been selected to participate in the Middle School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.

Student performers who are selected for this performance series receive the opportunity to work with and learn from renowned conductors as they prepare for and perform at a world-class venue – Carnegie Hall. In a special performance, students perform for New York concert-going patrons, educators and family. Chandler plays tenor saxophone. Chandler is the son of Jason and Chandace Jeep of Durango.

Cornell College accepts local students

Cornell College, a private liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa, has accepted these local students for admission:

Hannah Robertson of Durango was accepted and was awarded the Trustee Scholarship and a Music Award.

Deryn Candelaria of Durango was accepted and was awarded the Founders Scholarship.

Molly Black of Durango was accepted and was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship.

Cindy Kobrin awarded scholarship

Cindy Kobrin, an FFA member of Durango High School-FFA, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Durango Ford Lincoln and Ford Motor Company through the National FFA Scholarship program.

The Built Ford Tough – FFA Scholarship Program is designed to recognize FFA members’ talents and accomplishments while encouraging their future academic achievements. The scholarship is awarded by Ford Division, Ford Motor Company Fund and Ford Dealers to FFA members who are high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall or current collegiate students.

Lorianne Stevens awarded scholarship

Lorianne Stevens, an FFA member of Durango High School-FFA, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Durango Ford Lincoln and Ford Motor Company through the National FFA Scholarship program.

Energy council awards scholarship

La Plata County Energy Council awarded $6,000 in college scholarships to six high school students.

The council acknowledges the students’ outstanding academic careers, personal effort and community involvement during their high school years. The scholarship winners are:

Animas High School: Lacey Meek, $1,000, La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship.

Bayfield High School: Hannah Turner, $1,000, La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship; and Michael Semler, $1,000, 4-H La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship.

Durango High School: Emma Russell, $1,000, Aulbert Memorial La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship; and Shelia Prentice, $1,000, La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship.

Ignacio High School: Kelton Richmond, $1,000, La Plata County Energy Council Scholarship.

Funds for the scholarship program are raised at its annual golf tournament.
