Southwest Studies to host doctoral fellow
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will offer a doctoral fellowship in Southwestern history beginning in August.
The fellowship is a collaborative effort between the center and the University of Colorado at Boulder’s graduate program in the history department.
Doctoral candidates from the graduate program in Boulder are eligible for the full-academic-year fellowship at the center.
The fellow will provide research support at the center while teaching in FLC’s history department. While pursuing his or her own dissertation research and writing, the fellow will contribute to the center’s public programs by giving two presentations during the academic year on both personal research and support given to center collections projects and patrons.

Gateway to College program available
Students who have dropped out of school and are between the ages of 17 and 20 have a second chance to earn a high school diploma.
The Gateway to College program based at Southwest Colorado Community College gives students the chance to get back on track toward earning a diploma and college credits simultaneously. Information session will be held April 29 and May 13.

Host families sought for exchange program
World Heritage Student Exchange Program is seeking host families for high school boys and girls from Scandinavia, France, Germany, Italy, Thailand, China, South Korea and the former Soviet republics.
Host families provide room, board and guidance to a teenager. Couples, single parents and families with or without children in the home are encouraged to apply.
The students arrive from their home country shortly before the 2014-15 school year begins, and each student is fully insured, brings his/her own personal spending money and expects to bear his/her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Community college to host open house
An open house to showcase career and technical education at the west campus of Southwest Colorado Community College will be hosted at 6 p.m. today at 33057 U.S. Highway 160, seven miles east of Cortez.
Faculty will explain degree options in medical programs, including medical assisting, nursing aides and emergency medical services, along with technical programs, cosmetology, welding and automotive service.
Participants will be able to tour facilities, labs and shops. Enrollment is underway for summer and fall classes. Refreshments will be served.

Community college to feature art show
Art students at Southwest Colorado Community College’s west campus will be honored with a show and reception at 7 p.m. today in the Student Commons area at the college, 33057 U.S. Highway 160, seven miles east of Cortez.
Refreshments will be served. Cash prizes will be awarded to the drawing students. The art includes pencil and colored-pencil drawings on a variety of subjects. Art teacher Bryan Kyle will introduce the students and discuss their work.
This summer, two art classes will be offered: a watercolor class taught by Henry Woolbert and an art-sampler class, which will allow students to choose one month of basic sculpture and/or one month of beginning clay.

eSchool accepting enrollments for fall
The Southwest Colorado eSchool is accepting enrollments from regional students for the fall 2014 semester.
Students enroll for full-time study and can earn an eSchool diploma. Students also may consult with their current school counselors if they are interested in a blended-learning model involving both face-to-face and online coursework.
The eSchool is a public online school serving secondary students grades seven to 12. Enrollments are open to any student from the nine districts of southwestern Colorado, spanning from Dove Creek to Pagosa Springs. The school is a service of the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
The school will offer these summer school courses starting June 2 for middle school and high school. Registration runs through May. The school will host information nights at 5 p.m. at these locations:

Tuesday at the school’s Durango and Dolores learning centers.

Sawaya Law Firm offers scholarship
Sawaya Law Firm invites high school, college and law students to participate in the Driver Safety Scholarship Video Contest.
The contest deadline is Aug. 1. First place will receive $2,500, second place will receive $1,000 and third place will include three winners, each receiving $500.
The five scholarships will be awarded to students who can best create a viral video. The videos may highlight dangers of drinking and driving, texting and driving, driver error, fatigue, carelessness, etc.

The fifth-grade dinner/dance will be held on May 16. The theme this year is Mardi Gras. Hors d’oeuvres will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The music presentation and dance will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a DJ and dance immediately after the presentations. The cost is $5 per person.

Park Elementary School will host its fifth-grade graduation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 28, and the fifth-grade talent show will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. May 28 in the Park Café.
Animas High School seeks host families
Animas High School will host two U.S. State Department sponsored foreign exchange students next year.
These students go through a rigorous scholarship application process, and only the top 1 percent of applicants receive the scholarship.
Host families are needed to provide a supportive home environment, three meals a day and a bed. In exchange, host families learn about another culture, gain a broader perspective on the world and develop a relationship with a new “son” or “daughter.”
Summer camps available in Bayfield
Bayfield Early Education Programs is offering summer camps for children ages 3 to 8 in June and July.
The camps are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday from June 2 to June 26 and July 7 to July 31. Children will experience outdoor time, crafts, field trips, stories and other activities led by BEEP staff members. The schedule is flexible to accommodate swimming lessons, Bible schools and vacations. Applications are available at the school and online.
