DUI campaign targets prom season
The Heat Is On, an anti-impaired driving campaign led by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies, will be staged throughout the state through May 18 to crackdown on impaired driving during prom season.
Using alcohol or marijuana is illegal for anyone younger than 21 could result in the loss of a driver’s license.
These tips can help ensure teens have a safe prom:
Don’t get into a vehicle with a driver who may be drunk or high.
Have an emergency transportation plan ready, including someone to call if teenagers find themselves in a dangerous situation.
Call 277 or 911 if someone is impaired and behind the wheel.
Many schools offer an alcohol-free after-party. Durango High School, Bayfield High School and Ignacio High School will all host after-prom parties.

Christian school to host open house
Columbine Christian School, 1775 Florida Road, will host an open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
It will include a presentation beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a tour and question/answer session. Participants will meet teachers in an informal setting with no pressure. Columbine Christian encourages creative education for students from prekindergarten to eighth-grade.

A college night for juniors, called “Into the Wild: Finding the Right College Fit,” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the AHS commons. The AHS College Advising team will discuss the college admissions process, creating a college list, testing and the importance of the college visit. Parents are encouraged to attend.
A college night for freshmen and sophomores, called “Gearing Up,” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. April 22 in the AHS Commons.
Continuing-education classes available
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Expansive Thinking” will be offered by Ellen Babers and Mark Rowland on the evenings of April 22 and 24. This course is specifically designed to train individuals and teams in the art of creative participation and innovation. Through activities, challenges and discussions, participants will explore how each person’s natural tendencies can enhance a team’s ability and add synergy to group problem-solving. The cost is $69 for two classes.
“Local Medicinal Trees” with Anna-Marija Helt will be offered Friday evenings April 25 and May 2. The first class covers the uses, science and folklore around medicinal trees. In the second class, students will learn how to identify 10 medicinal trees, how to appropriately harvest medicine from them, the proper uses, dosage and contraindications. The cost is $54 for two classes.

Foundation’s fundraiser to benefit 9-R schools
Durango Education Foundation is raising money for Durango School District 9-R through its Community Action for Education (CAFÉ) campaign.
Community members are encouraged to help raise money in a variety of ways. People can attend a fundraising dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio. The cost is $75 per person or $600 per table of eight.

DHS English Department to host poetry slam
The Durango High School English Department will host the annual Poetry Slam competition from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 16 at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
This event promotes literacy and encourages teens to use the power of words to bring attention to the everyday issues of their lives.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. All area high school students interested in competing should sign up by 5:15 p.m. in Durango Arts Center’s theater.
This year’s prizes have been donated by Maria’s Bookshop and Mild to Wild Rafting.
Parents Night Out set for Saturday
The Special Education Advisory Committee, San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Durango School District 9-R, Community Connections and Tri-County Head Start invite parents of children with any disability to attend a Parents Night Out from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.
The topic will be “Summer Activities for Children with Disabilities.”
Agencies that serve students across the disabilities spectrum will talk to parents about their programs.

‘Taste of Music’ slated for April 17
Music in the Mountains Goes to School, a curriculum partner with Durango School District 9-R, will present “Taste of Music” on April 17 in conjunction with the Fort Lewis College Music Department.
Third- and fourth-graders from Durango, as well as regional schools, have been invited to the Community Concert Hall for a program that demonstrates different instruments and musical styles through performance.
FLC music students will perform their concert twice, at 9 and 10:30 a.m., at the concert hall for more than 1,000 students.
Health Careers Camp will be held in June
Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center announces the Health Careers Camp for teenagers will be held June 11, 12 and 13 at Fort Lewis College.
The camp is open to eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade students from Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Montezuma, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel counties.
Students will explore the many fields within the health-care industry and experience hands-on learning activities, including application of sutures, checking vital signs and learning CPR.
Students also will participate in clinic site visits and tours while shadowing professionals.
A mock trauma event by local emergency response organizations will be staged.
The camp will offer information about the educational requirements necessary to pursue a degree or certification in a health profession as well as share information about financial resources.
The camp will be limited to 50 students. The registration fee is $125. Scholarship awards based on financial hardship are available.
