CSU-Global offers $5,000 scholarships to rural students
Colorado State University-Global Campus is offering $5,000 scholarships for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in select rural Colorado counties, including San Juan County.
CSU-Global is the 100 percent online university within the CSU system. It offers bachelor’s-degree and master’s-degree programs designed for working adults.
Because its courses are entirely online, students do not need to move to finish their college degrees.
CSU-Global also offers monthly term starts of compressed eight-week terms throughout the year, and a tuition guarantee that locks in a student’s tuition rate.
Recipients will receive $5,000 toward their tuition. Applications are being accepted at http://csuglobal.edu/coscholarship.

Alpine Bank extends application deadline
Alpine Bank has extended the application deadline for the J. Robert Young Scholarships to Monday.
Graduating high school seniors meeting the criteria of the scholarships may receive an application through their high school counselor, www.wc-cf.org, www.alpinebank.com or by visiting any Alpine Bank location.
The scholarships are offered to graduates of public high schools in communities served by Alpine Bank. Two $1,000 renewable scholarships are awarded each year to students with a 2.75 GPA or higher who are seeking a business-related degree.
Students must attend a Colorado college. Applications must be postmarked or emailed to the Western Colorado Community Foundation on or before Monday.

Durango Education Center announces courses
Durango Education Center will offer these course:
Beginning Spanish II will be held Monday and Wednesday from April 7 to May 14. This class is for people who have taken at least two semesters of Spanish.
Conversational Spanish will take place Monday and Wednesday from April 7 to May 14. This class is for people who have had at least two years of Spanish and would like to practice speaking and improve their knowledge of the language.
Computing Fundamentals will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. beginning Monday and take place Mondays and Wednesdays. The class will cover an introduction to computers.
Excel 1 will be offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Monday to April 23.
Word I will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from April 14 to 23.

Continuing-education classes available at FLC
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:
“Secrets of Organic Gardening,” a three-part workshop, will be taught by Frank LeBeau from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 5, 19 and 26. Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience and learn how to produce high yields of nutritious crops using safe, natural, horticultural practices. The cost is $199 for all three or take single sessions for $79.
“Introduction to Chi Gung” with martial arts champion Sage Petersen will be offered Wednesday and Friday evenings, April 2 to 11. Chi Gung is a gentle exercise done with breathing exercises and is known to build energy. Petersen will teach the form “One Thousand Palms” for students to incorporate into their personal practice. The cost $69 for four classes.

Relay for Life team to host family dance
The Ignacio schools Relay for Life team will host its annual Family Dance from 7 to 9 p.m. April 11 at the Ignacio Elementary School cafétorium.
Music will be provided by DJ Oscar Cosio. There will be a bake sale and participants will have the chance to design a luminaire for loved ones who have battled cancer. The luminaries will be displayed at the Relay for Life event June 27. A door prize drawing for Bobcat collectibles also will take place.

Park Elementary to hold dinner, movie night
Park Elementary will host its Book Fair Kickoff on April 4 with Family Dinner & Movie Night.
Dinner will be at 5 p.m. in the café and will include hot dogs, chili dogs, chili bowls, Frito pies and salads. The movie will start at 6 p.m. in the café.
Participants should bring blankets and lawn chairs. The book fair will run from April 4 to 11 in the library.
Pine River learning center announces courses
Pine River Community Learning Center, 54 Mill St. in Bayfield, will offer these courses:
Kennie Monger will teach salsa from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. April 7, 14 and 21 at the Bayfield Senior Center, 111 South West St. in Bayfield. The price for the class is $80 per person or $150 per couple. Registration is needed by noon April 4.
A beginning photography class taught by a professional photographer will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 17 at the learning center in Bayfield. The fee for this class is $25. Registration is needed before April 17.

The class “Learn to Compost and Why” will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 29 at the learning center in Ignacio, 535 Candelaria Heights. Participants will find out what does and does not go into a compost pile. The class will cost $25.
