Animas High School announces these events:
Animas High School students are selling locally roasted, fair-trade, organic coffee from Desert Sun Coffee Roasters through Friday to raise money to increase free/reduced lunch options for students. AHS students debated and voted on where the coffee-sale proceeds would go, and because of the generosity of Desert Sun, each bag sold contributes nearly $6 to this effort.
Students in Crystal Pennington’s Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 classes will host a Noche Latina Exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Commons at AHS. They will share the celebrations that take place in Spanish-speaking countries. During the first hour, students will recite poetry and teach about Latin dance, food and music. The second hour will be a celebration and dance.
There will be no school for AHS students Monday in observance of Presidents Day.
The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday on campus. All are welcome to attend.
Enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open through March 12. Information sessions will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; 6 to 7 p.m. March 3 at AHS; and 6 to 7 p.m. March 12 at AHS. Mountain Middle announces events
Mountain Middle School announces these events:
Chris Jaquette’s eighth-grade science students will present their “Rocket Project” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school. During the exhibition, all students will display their final rocket design, flight data, scale drawings and scientific justification for their specific design choices.
Josh Dalley’s sixth-grade science class will exhibit “Dive Deep,” a submarine project focused on the relationship between mass, volume and density. Students also will present a scientific paper outlining the process they followed. Students will display and demonstrate their projects from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The Whodunit Fundraiser and Mountain Mystery Art Show and Sale will offer more than 50 original works (photography, paintings, pottery, jewelry, etc.) donated by local artists, students and residents. Each piece is $100. The mystery – who created the art – will be solved at the Unveiling Party on Feb. 28. All the artworks will be on display at Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave., and be available for purchase at mountainmysteryart.com from Feb. 14-28.
Mountain Middle School enrollment for incoming sixth, seventh and eighth grades is open through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 28. The lottery will be held March 4. For more information and to enter the lottery, visit www.mountainmiddleschool.org.
Durango school board to meet Feb. 24
The Durango School District 9-R board will meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Escalante and Miller middle schools will be highlighted.
Miller Angel Games to support school
Miller Middle School’s fundraiser, The Miller Angel Games, will be held Feb. 23 on the Miller football field.
Students will divide into teams representing different countries and compete in various games. Before the games, students will collect donations from family members, friends and neighbors to help fund enrichments to curriculum and instruction.
This money will help provide new programs, technology and service- and action-oriented projects with a student focus.
The fundraising goal is $15,000. There are corporate sponsorship opportunities available for this event that carry on through the calendar year.

‘Keys to Success’ needs volunteers
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for the second annual “Keys to High School Success ... And Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who will attend high school next year.
The goal of the conference is to provide tools to support students in building positive self-images, strong relationships and a deep sense of self-advocacy – all of which lend to their success in high school and beyond.
Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7. To volunteer, email info@durango.k12.co.us.
DHS spring sports registration underway
Durango High School now is collecting participation fees and issuing red cards for spring 2014-15 athletic participants.
Spring sports begin Feb. 23 and include baseball, girls golf, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, girls soccer, boys swimming, girls tennis and boys and girls track.
To receive a red card, students must bring a physical/conduct form, medical consent form and participation fee to the Activities Office.
The Activities Office will be accepting paperwork and participation fees through Feb. 20.
Fees for 9-R students are $75 for an individual with a $150 individual cap and $200 family cap. For non-9-R students, fees are $112.50 for an individual with a $225 individual cap and $300 family cap.

Needham Elementary is holding book drive
Needham Elementary School will be collecting books to help a fellow school in Costa Rica build its library.
The La Paz Community School in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, needs books.
Right now, the school has about 280 books for all grades, pre-K through 12.
People can donate used fiction or non-fiction books in English for any reading level and any grade. Spanish language fiction books also can be donated.
Books can be dropped off through February at Needham or at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Methodist Thrift Shop offers scholarship
The Methodist Thrift Shop board has established a scholarship fund to help local people advance their education.
Applicants are considered on their church involvement, leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities and personal attributes.
Applications are available at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at high school counselors’ offices.
The application deadline is March 15.
9-R program adds outdoor experiences
Pathways to Independence, Durango School District 9-R’s special education program for students ages 18 to 21, is expanding now is offering an outdoor program.
Pathways is asking for community support through donations of new or gently used outdoor equipment. Donations may include items such as tents, headlamps, camping stoves, life jackets and camping gear.
Students also gain working experience at Common Grounds Café, a coffee cart run through a partnership with Durango Public Library, the Durango School District 9-R, San Juan BOCES and local businesses.
Community members can support Pathways by patronizing Common Grounds Café, which is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday in the lobby of the library, or by visiting durangoschools.org/pathways-independence to learn how to donate outdoor gear, or to make a financial donation.
Dyslexia presentation Tuesday at FLC
Dr. Drake Duane, a behavioral neurologist and dyslexia expert, will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College.
He will discuss the diagnosis, treatment and life advantages of those with dyslexia and offer his take on the latest advances for helping yourself or child. The presentation is free.
Dyslexia is defined as a persistent difficulty reading, writing and spelling despite good intelligence, schooling and motivation.

Florida Mesa Elementary School invites parents to have coffee and discuss ideas for working with your child at home in reading and math.
Coffee Talk is held from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. Wednesday mornings in the front lobby.
Outdoor education meeting scheduled
The Four Corners School of Outdoor Education will host its 16th annual Bioregional Outdoor Education Conference Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Utah State University Blanding Arts and Events Center.
The conference is open to all teachers in the region. The cost is $75 for the full conference, plus lodging.
The theme is “Circle of Learning: Experience, Engage, Express.”
A variety of workshops will provide teachers ideas for effective teaching methods they can incorporate into their classroom.

Tax workshop offered for FLC students
Know Your Dough, a local nonprofit providing financial literacy skills for youth and young adults, and Fort Lewis College’s honors accounting organization, Beta Alpha Psi, will co-host a tax workshop for FLC students.
They will learn the basics of doing their taxes and be able to prepare their 1040EZ and state return.
The workshop will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Education & Business Hall, Room 61.
