Pine River Library receives state grant
The Pine River Library District announces that it has received a grant in the amount of $4,500 from the Colorado State Library through the State Grants to Libraries Act.
The money will be used for print and audio/visual materials that support educational or early childhood-related purposes.
The State Grants to Libraries Act was funded by the Colorado Legislature to help increase access to early literacy and educational materials.

Arts center to offer ‘School’s Out’ series
The Durango Arts Center will present these programs as part of its “School’s Out” winter camp series for children ages 6 to 10 led by Sandra Butler, the center’s education director:
“Imagination Magic: Fairy Houses & Fairy Tales” will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 21. Children will design and build their own fairy, elf or mini-being house complete with furniture and art.
“Imagination Magic: Let’s Make a Circus” will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 28. Participants will learn about artist Alexander Calder and his fun circus creations. Children will construct moveable circus rides, circus animals and circus tents for clown puppets to perform.
The cost of these camps is $50 for center members and $65 for nonmembers.

Shining Star Scholarship recipients to be honored
Bank of Colorado, 1199 Main Ave., will host a reception for the recipients of the 2016 Music in the Mountains Shining Star Scholarships from 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 3 in the bank lobby.
These scholarships, sponsored by Bank of Colorado, are designed to help defray the cost of private music lessons for students who want to develop their musical skills. Financial need is important for awarding these scholarships, but it is not the only criterion.
Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and music will be performed by the 2015 shining stars.

The Durango School District 9-R district office will have modified hours during Thanksgiving break.
The district office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 25. The office will be closed Nov. 26 and Nov. 27.

Needham Elementary School is taking orders for the 2016 Be Local Coupon Book.
The books are $20 each. People can order them through a Needham student or at the Needham school office through Friday. Payment at the time of ordering is required. Books will be available for pickup the first week in December.

Fort Lewis Mesa to offer Turkey Trot on Wednesday
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will host its annual Turkey Trot and lunch Wednesday.
The Turkey Trot will start at 10 a.m. Thanksgiving dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The menu will include: Turkey, gravy, roasted squash and veggies, mashed potatoes, roll, dessert and juice. Prices are $2.55 for students and $4 for adults, which can be paid at the door. Volunteers are needed for food preparation and serving.

Park Elementary School will sell Desert Sun Coffee as part of its Parent Teacher Organization fundraiser.

Fifth-graders at Riverview to perform African folk tale
Riverview Elementary School’s fifth-grade students will perform the African folk tale “Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears” arranged and retold by Brian Hiller and Don Dupont at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Riverview’s Eagle Theater.

The AHS Osprey Games, an interactive, game-show-themed fundraising event celebrating students and faculty, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. The evening will include appetizers, a cash bar, the opportunity to mix and mingle with AHS parents, staff members and supporters. This is a free event, but there will be an invitation to donate. All are welcome.

In partnership with Voices of the Animas, Animas Watershed Partnership, Navajo Preparatory School and the San Juan Water and Soil Conservation District, Marcus Renner’s 12th-grade humanities class will present the Animas River Youth Confluence from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the San Juan College Lecture Hall in No. 7103 at the Information and Technology Center. The students will host a potluck dinner and seminar discussion, show a short video, exhibit river-themed art and give a special musical presentation.
FLC resident assistants attend leadership meeting
Fort Lewis College Student Housing and Conference Services recently sent eight resident assistants to RAppin, an annual leadership conference for resident assistants at institutions throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
The conference gave resident assistants an opportunity to learn from and network with numerous campuses, bringing new ideas for programming and services back to the FLC campus.

International Education Week events will take place on the Fort Lewis College campus through Thursday.
Judith Reynolds of the Professional Associates of Fort Lewis College will join FLC students to present “Dear Father, Don’t Worry” at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Roshong Recital Hall at FLC. The presentation tells the story of Gustaf Nordenskiöld (portrayed by Swedish exchange student Fredrik Billstrom), a young Swedish scientist who pioneered archaeological studies of Mesa Verde.

The school’s sixth-grade humanities students will host an Alice in Wonderland exhibition and book release party from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the ballroom at Fort Lewis College. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s imagination and classic books, each sixth-grader has created a personal project that reflects his or her own sense of Alice’s adventures. In addition, the students have self-published a professional anthology of their own writings that will be for sale at the event. People who attend are encouraged to discuss how literature reflects real life as well as assess their professionalism, enthusiasm and hard work.
Christian school to host Thanksgiving program
Columbine Christian School will have a Thanksgiving program at 11 a.m. Friday.
