Lewis

Kyle Lewis to graduate with honors

Kyle Lewis, son of Darrell and Allyn (Surdey) Lewis, graduated from Fort Lewis College on May 2 with Summa Cum Laude honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in geology.

His career begins with a position in mining and research company in Arizona. Before moving, he will visit friends and family, climb mountains in Colorado and present his senior research at the Geological Society of America meeting in Wyoming. Lewis is a 2011 graduate of Alamosa High School.

DHS students receive recognition

These Durango High School 11th- and 12th-grade students received Academic All-State – Honorable Mention with a grade point average of 3.30 to 3.59:

Band: Claire James, Jacob Selbe, Jennifer Snowberger, Jessica Snowberger, Mary Snyder and Nicholas Wilbur.

Baseball: Garrett Moore and Dayne Rowley.

Boys lacrosse: Enver Djunushbekov, John Hunter Hall, Jack Marshall and Henry Muir.

Girls lacrosse: Alexandra Caplin, Isabelle Guerra and Megan Robinson.

Orchestra: Grace Cooper, Joshua Koch, Kanyon Mann, Jessica Snowberger and Nicholas Wilbur.

Girls soccer: Sydney Mattox, Risa Ontiveros and Elizabeth Wiegert.

Girls tennis: Jennifer Snowberger.

Boys track: John Lee, David Moenning and Liam O’Brien.

Girls track: Miranda Gallegos.

Vocal: Katelyn Harrison, Jessica Hayden and Alyssa Wineholt.

Local FLC students display work

These local senior-level art and design majors from Fort Lewis College exhibited their creations in the Art Gallery during their exhibition, “End of the Line”:

Tamira Sonnie of Durango.

The works on display showed advanced projects in media ranging from graphic design to fine art.

Gretchen Wilson receives recognition

Colorado Education Association recognized Gretchen Wilson, Durango Education Association, as nominee for The NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence at its 2015 Delegate Assembly.

The award recognizes educators whose professional practice and advocacy for the profession are exemplary, and who are examples of the millions of educators who work in America’s public schools. Each state nominates one educator for the award.
