Jennifer Smith receives scholarship from Ford

The National FFA organization awarded a $1,000 Built Ford Tough Scholarship to Jennifer Smith, a recent graduate of Pagosa Springs High School and member of the Pagosa Springs FFA.

The scholarship is sponsored by Durango Ford Lincoln as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Selections for the scholarship were based on the applicant’s leadership, academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience, work experience in agricultural education and future goals.

Smith will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to pursue a degree in agricultural engineering.

Community college now offers medical imaging

This fall, Southwest Colorado Community College’s East Campus will add new certificate programs in medical imaging.

The college will add a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Certificate Program and a Computed Tomography Certificate Program.

These are professional development opportunities for registered radiologic technologists. Both classes will be offered primarily online through Pueblo Community College with the exception of clinical experience components.

The fall semester will begin Aug. 24. Enrollment is open now, and priority registration ends Aug. 7.

Each of these programs can be completed in two semesters and provide hands-on training with advanced medical imaging equipment.

At program completion, students will be eligible for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Registry Exam.

Students can enroll at community college

Registration is under way at Southwest Colorado Community College in Durango and Mancos.

Fall classes will begin Aug. 24. Students are encouraged to register before Aug. 7. Making an appointment with an adviser at either campus is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. The college offers guaranteed academic transfer classes and associate’s degrees.

To register, visit one of the Go!Zones located at 701 Camino del Rio, Durango and 33057 U.S. Highway 160 between Mancos and Cortez. When registering, new students should sign up for one of four orientations scheduled in August. Orientations for new students will be held on both campuses on these dates:

2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 in Durango.

5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in Durango.

2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 18 in Mancos.

2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 25 in Mancos.

Crystal Purcell honored for work as biology major

Crystal Purcell of Pagosa Springs was named to the University of Dallas dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester for earning a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Purcell received a bachelor’s degree in biology.

The biology department gave Purcell the Passing Comprehensive Exams with Distinction Award. She was honored in front of the entire senior class and the university faculty at the formal convocation ceremony.

Aztec Ruins invites teachers to camp

Aztec Ruins National Monument will offer the Kinteel Teacher Kamp.

The free workshop seeks to inspire teachers to integrate the resources at Aztec Ruins into their classrooms.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Aztec Ruins National Monument.

The group will meet in the picnic area and visit a number of different areas within the park.

Participants should be prepared for a day of walking and outdoor activity. Close-toed shoes, a hat and sunscreen are recommended.

Teachers who want to attend the free workshop can register by calling (505) 334-6174, ext. 0, or emailing azru_education@nps.gov by Wednesday.

Danielle Pajak earns bachelor’s degree

Danielle Pajak of Pagosa Springs received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Dallas at the commencement ceremony May 17.

AHS to host game night for students at Santa Rita

Osprey Summer Game Night for all current and former Animas High School students, families, faculty and friends will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Rita Park.

Participants are invited to bring croquet mallets, frisbees, bocce balls, checker boards or other games to play.

New infant, toddler center is opening in Durango

Owner and director Arawyn Madu, a Durango resident with a passion for children, announces the opening of Rivendell Early Education Center.

The mission at Rivendell Early Education Center is to promote the growth and development of infants, toddlers and their families through supportive and developmentally appropriate education in a safe, nurturing and accepting environment.

The school will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 103A.

Participants should enter through the west-facing doors on the ground level and turn right. Participants will be able to tour the school and meet the teaching team.
