IHS Choices class showcases skills
Students in the Ignacio High School Choices class presented their skills in dialectical behavior therapy at the class’s final equine therapy session and spring barbecue.
Students brought family and friends as guests.
The Choices class teaches students skills to become mindful, to deal with distress and to accept life as it is. The class uses horses to help them practice these skills.
The Southern Ute Indian Tribe courts provide grant funding for the program.

Two new scholarships are open for a very brief application period. The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday.
The members of the Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado will help “Build the Future” for two young people.
These $500 awards will support students graduating from a Durango School District 9-R high school who want to pursue post-secondary education in any aspect of the construction industry.
The winning candidate will demonstrate a good work ethic, strong interest in pursuing a career in building construction or design and willingness to learn.

Mountain Middle announces events
Mountain Middle School will hold these events:
Eighth-grade students will conduct internships through Friday. They will have an exhibition June 1 at the Fort Lewis College Student Union Ballroom to display and defend what they learned during their internships.
The week of May 18, all students will participate in Spring Intersession, which is a weeklong, intensive study course based on a specific topic. Courses will include: scuba diving, rafting the Colorado River while studying water science, traveling throughout the Southwest on an Anasazi odyssey to study history, traveling to Santa Fe to study art and a design class using 3-D printing and laser cutting.
Josh Dalley’s sixth-grade science class will exhibit “Elevating the Bar,” a magnetic-train levitation project focused on the relationship between atoms, elements and magnetism. The goal of this project was for students to design and build a levitating train that will travel on a straight track. Students also will present element essays from the periodic table. Students will demonstrate their projects from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Middle School, 108 West 31st St. People who attend will be encouraged to engage with and assess students’ professionalism and ability to articulate their learning.
AHS ends school year with numerous events

The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, at AHS.
The Senior Celebration will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sorrel Sky Gallery.
The Senior Supper will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 21 in the AHS Commons. This celebration is for seniors and faculty members only.
AHS Advisory Olympics will take place from 8:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 22 at Santa Rita Park.
AHS graduation will take place at 4 p.m. May 22 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. General admission seating will be available in the balcony section on a first-come, first-served basis.
There are a handful of available spots for incoming ninth- and 10th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year.

DHS graduation to be held May 29
Durango High School graduation will be held at 6 p.m. May 29 at the DHS stadium.
Florida Mesa parents invited to Coffee Talks
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host Coffee Talks from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday.
People will have an opportunity to visit with teachers and staff members. The event will include coffee and a breakfast treat.
DHS summer school will begin June 8
Durango High School will offer summer school from June 8 to July 3.
Students may take summer school courses only if they have previously failed a course and need to recover credit.
All courses will be computer-based using an online educational system called APEX. English, math, science and social studies core academic classes will be available.
Fees must be paid before a student can enroll in the course and all courses taken during summer school must be completed by July 3.
If courses are not completed, course fees will not be refunded, and students will need to retake the failed course during the next school year.

Home-schoolers attend 9-R program
Durango School District 9-R’s Shared School Program is taking applications for the 2015-16 school year.
The program is designed for home-school families and offers classes such as art, music, drama computer, physical education and Spanish. Elementary school classes will meet from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Middle school classes will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. The district is considering expanding the middle school program to two days a week for the upcoming school year. All classes will meet at Miller Middle School.

Grants can fund additional child care
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County is accepting grant applications from child care programs (homes and centers) in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma and San Juan counties.
Available grants include expansion grants to increase child care slots for infants and toddlers by offering a one-time expansion grant to licensed programs or programs pursuing licensing to accommodate a greater number of children ages 0 to 36 months in the five-county region of Southwest Colorado. The maximum amount of the award is $1,500 per an infant/toddler slot.

AVID to welcome next year’s students
The Durango High School AVID staff members will welcome the 2015-16 AVID students, parents and teachers with a desserts and drinks celebration Tuesday in the DHS cafeteria.
AVID is a college preparatory system that emphasizes reading, writing, organization, collaboration and inquiry to reach college and career success.
The class uses guest speakers, college visits and college tutors in structured tutorial sessions to engage students in future planning and lessons.

Juniors, seniors can take college classes
Durango High School juniors and seniors will have a chance to take classes at either Fort Lewis College or Southwest Colorado Community College.

Art students to show their work at DHS
The Durango High School Spring Art Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the DHS commons.
The show will feature student artwork from all classes from the spring semester.
