Mountain Middle School to open enrollment
Enrollment at Mountain Middle School for next year’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades is open from Monday through Feb. 29.

Seed Studio announces after-school art classes
Seed Studio, Room 114 in the Smiley Building at 1309 East Third Ave., will offer these classes and workshops:
Creative art workshops will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays for four weeks. The workshops will be held Monday, Jan. 11, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. The workshops are open to children ages 8 to 12. The cost is $92. The workshops will focus on printmaking techniques such as sun prints, mono prints, block prints and relief prints.
The After School Art Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays for six weeks. The club is open to children ages 6 to 12 and will be held from Jan. 6 to Feb. 10. The cost is $90. Students will explore different art mediums, themes and a variety of techniques while creating art.
Lotus Girls – Art & Yoga will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursdays for six weeks. The group is open to girls ages 8 to 12 and will take place from Jan. 7 to Feb. 11. The cost is $115. Girls will meditate, create, practice yoga and explore what it means to be a young woman in today’s world.

La Plata Electric to offer scholarships open house
To assist high school seniors and their parents with the application process for college scholarships available through La Plata Electric Association, the cooperative will host an open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at LPEA’s Bodo Industrial Park headquarters, 45 Stewart St.
LPEA staff members will answer questions. No reservations are necessary and copies of all applications will be available. All high school seniors, including home-schooled students, in LPEA’s service territory who receive their electricity from LPEA are eligible to apply for the variety of funding opportunities. The deadline for application is March 1. Attendance at the open house is not a requirement of application.
LPEA directly offers the LPEA Scholarship (four-year) and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship (two-year) and provides for additional affiliated rural electric scholarships/awards offered by Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
LPEA will award two four-year scholarships (140 credit hours) for students attending any college or university. LPEA will cover tuition, books and fees, up to $28,000 over four years, given that the students maintain minimum qualifications.

Animas High School announces programs
Animas High School announces programs:
AHS is a tuition-free public charter school that prepares students for college and post-secondary success by creating critical thinkers and engaged students through a project-based curriculum. Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year will open Monday. All families with students who will be entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade next fall are invited to complete an Intent to Enroll form. If there are more students who complete the form than available spots for a particular grade, AHS will hold a lottery March 18. All interested families are encouraged to visit the school. Student shadow days will begin Jan. 14 and will be held every Thursday through March 17. AHS information nights will be held on campus and at various other venues throughout the enrollment season. DHS graduate Justin Blasi earns engineering doctorate
Justin Blasi, a 2005 graduate of Durango High School, recently earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines for his research on fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics modeling.
Blasi and his wife, Margaret, live in Denver. He is the son of Vic and Karen Blasi of Durango.
