Carly Pierson named to dean’s list
Carly Pierson of Durango, a student at Cornell College located in Mount Vernon, Iowa, has been named to the dean’s list, earning High Honors.
A grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale is required for this designation. “High honors” are awarded to students with 3.8 to 3.99 averages.
Katie Cunnion named to dean’s list
Katie Marie Cunnion of Durango was named to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln dean’s list/honor roll for the fall semester of the 2013-14 academic year.
Cunnion is a freshman undeclared major in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Programs. Qualification for the dean’s list varies among the eight undergraduate colleges and the honor roll for undeclared students in Explore Center and pre-professional programs. All qualifying grade-point averages are based on a minimum of 12 or more graded semester hours.
Former FLC student receives award
Geology student Sabina Kraushaar won best in presentation for the Basin and Range session at the 37th annual Geothermal Resources Council meeting in Las Vegas.
More than 150 presentations were given during the convention, each judged on technical content, quality of visual aids and the presenter’s communication skills. Kraushaar’s presentation, “Structural Controls of the MacFarlane Geothermal System,” began as a research project for her masters degree in geology. She visited the Black Rock Desert to map out fault lines and geothermal activity. To do this, she ran a variety of tests, including geological mapping, temperature readings and magnetic surveys.
Kraushaar first became interested in geology during an introductory class at Fort Lewis College. After receiving her undergraduate degree at Fort Lewis, she transferred to the University of Nevada, Reno. She will be graduating in May 2014 and hopes to pursue a career in the geothermal or gas and oil industry.

Ballet Folklorico announces partnership
Ballet Folklorico will continue to exist in Durango because of an educational grant from La Plata Electric Association and a new formal partnership between Fort Lewis College and the Durango Education Center.
On Feb. 18, representatives from FLC’s El Centro de Muchos Colores Hispano Center and the Durango Education Center signed a memorandum of understanding to combine and collaborate both youth and adult Ballet Folklorico dance programs in Durango. The new three-year pilot program will be called Ballet Folklorico de Durango.
Ballet Folklorico de Durango’s new pilot program’s educational goal is to increase Latino student graduation rates in La Plata County and to recruit, retain and graduate more Hispanic students at FLC. With a grant from LPEA for $3,500 that was awarded in January to El Centro, the pilot program is underway. Classes for youths ages 5-17 will begin at 2 p.m. today at El Centro, located on the ground floor of the FLC student union. Adult community members or FLC students are invited to join the Ballet Folklorico de Durango Club which meets from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at El Centro.

Elizabeth Schell named to dean’s list
Elizabeth R. Schell, a senior at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was named to the dean’s list for her academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2013-14 year.
Schell is the daughter of Jeffrey and Lori Schell of Durango, and attended Durango High School.
