Erin Brinton receives doctorate

Erin Brinton, daughter of Scott and Marjorie Brinton of Durango, received her doctorate in plant biology from the University of California, Riverside on June 13.

Brinton’s dissertation was titled “Flooding Responses in Zea mays ssp. mays: Genetic Variation and Molecular Characterization.” She completed her doctoral research in the lab of Dr. Julia Bailey-Serres.

Since receiving her doctorate, Brinton has taken a postdoctoral researcher position at her undergraduate alma mater Occidental College. She is investigating aquaporin proteins, channels that move water in and out of cells in a variety of species of tank Bromeliads. These plants receive all of their water through a specialized leaf structure that forms a tank in which water from rainfall is collected and stored. Her lab is broadly interested in understanding the relationship of these tanks to plant water and nutrient acquisition.
