Animas High School receives distinction

At the Colorado Charter Schools Conference on Feb. 20 and 21, Animas High School was recognized as a Distinction School based on its school-wide performance in the areas of academics, finance and operations during the 2012-13 school year.

The school produced academic scores in the top 25 percent of all schools across the state.

Paige Kramer named to dean’s list

Paige Kramer, a former Durango resident, was named to the 2013 fall semester dean’s list at Simmons College in Boston.

Her major is nursing. To qualify for dean’s list status, undergraduate students must obtain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, based on 12 or more credit hours of work in classes using the letter-grade system.

Joseph DuCharme named to dean’s list

Joseph DuCharme, a native of Pagosa Springs, has been named to the University of Iowa’s dean’s list for the 2013 fall semester.

Undergraduate students who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on 12 semester hours or more of university-graded course work during a given semester or summer session and who have no semester hours of incomplete or no grade reported during the same semester are recognized by inclusion on the dean’s list for that semester. The university is located in Iowa City, Iowa.

John Skeath named to dean’s list

John P. Skeath, 2013 Durango High School graduate, has been named to the dean’s list during the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year at the Colorado School of Mines.

Alexa Brennan earns master’s degree

Alexa Brennan, a resident of Durango, received a master of science degree in accounting, assurance and advisory during the December 2013 Southern Methodist University commencement ceremony.

The university is a nationally ranked private university in Dallas.

Jimmy Ettema graduates from college

Jimmy Ettema, a resident of Durango, graduated from the University of Houston in the fall 2013 semester.

Ettema graduated with a bachelor of science in electrical power engineering technology.

Hannah Robertson accepted to college

Hannah Robertson of Durango has been accepted to Cornell College, a private liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

LPEA to send students to Washington, D.C.

Area high school students Kaycee Bennett of Pagosa Springs and Logan Graham of Durango have been selected to represent La Plata Electric Association as part of the National Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., to be held June 12-19.

Students completed an application and wrote a 500-word essay covering an aspect of the electric industry of their choosing. LPEA’s student representatives will join juniors from the cooperative’s sister electric co-ops across Colorado.

Applications for the 2015 Washington, D.C., Youth Tour will be available in November at LPEA’s offices in Durango and Pagosa Springs, through area high school counselors, or online at www.lpea.coop. Home-schooled students are eligible to apply.

The opportunity to participate in the D.C. Youth Tour, is open to all current high school juniors who receive their electric power from La Plata Electric Association.

Ansel Schiavone named to dean’s list

Ansel Schiavone of Durango was one of 320 students named to Denison University’s 2013 fall semester dean’s list.

Students who achieve dean’s list status have maintained a grade point average of 3.7 or better (out of 4.0) for the semester. Schiavone is a member of the Denison Class of 2017.

The university is located in Granville, Ohio.

Home-school student joins society

The National Society of High School Scholars announced Home School Clearing House student Carter Little from Bayfield has been selected to become a member of the organization.

The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment. Membership entitles qualified students to enjoy a variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.
