Fort Lewis College students work with AmeriCorps
These local Fort Lewis College students were recognized for their work with AmeriCorps:
Amanda Crites of Durango received a 675 Hour Award.
Stephen Sellers of Durango received a 450 Hour Award.
Christine Myers of Durango received a 900 Hour Award.
AmeriCorps members serve in a nonprofit or government site focusing on either education or capacity building projects. The member completes 450 to 900 hours in one area that gives back to the local community. Upon completion of service, members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award between $1,468 to $2,775 depending on the level of their time commitment.
Tyler Otteson graduates from university May 25
Tyler Otteson of Hesperus graduated from the University of San Diego on May 25.
Otteson earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Cowbelles announces scholarship recipients
The La Plata County Cowbelles and the La Plata-Archuleta County Cattlemen Association announce the students selected to receive their annual scholarships.
The Cowbelles and Cattlemen provide the scholarships program as a way to support local youth that are interested in agriculture. Applicants are judged on the quality of the application, academic achievements, extracurricular activities and contributions explicitly related to agriculture.
The La Plata County Cowbelles have chosen Kayla Boren and Lorianne Stevens to each receive a $1,000 scholarship for the 2014-2015 school years.
The La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen Association has selected seven students to each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The names of those selected are: Austin McMenimen, Bryce Boren, Kelton Richmond, Michael Semler, Austin Riley, Miranda LaShell and Russell VanSoelen.
This is the inaugural year for the Phyllis Lee Memorial Scholarship, which is administered by the La Plata County Cowbelles. The family of Phyllis Lee announces that Megan Semler will be the recipient for the 2014-2015 school years.
Carly Pierson named to dean’s list for spring
Carly Pierson of Durango was named to Cornell College’s dean’s list for the Spring 2014 semester.
Pierson earned Honors. Honors signifies a semester grade-point average of 3.6 to 3.79.

Joshua Stout graduates with honors from university
Joshua Stout of Durango graduated with honors from the University of Denver on June 7, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a bachelor’s degree in criminology with a minor in business administration.
Stout also received a Distinction in Criminology and was inducted into the National Honors Society of Sociology, Alpha Kappa Delta. He will continue his education with a graduate program in Fall 2015.
He is the son of Sue Beller and Terry Stout, both of Durango.
