9-R superintendent to host round table

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will lead a round table to discuss the district’s current academic programs from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Needham Elementary School.

Participants will help determine how the district should prioritize spending. They should bring questions, concerns and priorities so the district can protect the programs deemed most important.

9-R board approves academic calendar

The Durango School District 9-R School Board approved the academic calendar for the 2014-15 school year.

Early release days are to be determined, as are the dates for parent/teacher conferences.

The website will be updated as soon as those dates have been selected.

Financial-aid meeting will be held Dec. 10

The Fort Lewis College Office of Financial Aid will present “Financial Aid 101: How to Pay for College” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Durango High School library.

The free financial-aid presentation will have information about how to submit the Free Application for Federal Aid and information about the different types of financial aid available.

Participants will be able to ask questions about the financial-aid process.

Florida Mesa school collecting food items

Florida Mesa Elementary School is collecting food items for the Durango Food Bank and items for the hat and mitten tree for Project Merry Christmas.

Durango schools closed for Thanksgiving week

All schools in Durango School District 9-R will be closed through Friday for the Thanksgiving break.

The District Office will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Escalante students selected for choir

These Escalante Middle School students were selected for Colorado Middle School All State Choir: McKenna Langford, Kacey Chen, Alpin Hanson-Holladay, Ryan Colley and Lance Kemp

They will participate in the All State Choir in February in Denver.

There were 715 students who auditioned for two choirs. About 350 students were selected to participate.

Durango Arts Center to offer art classes

The Durango Arts Center will offer “Mondays are for Art” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 9 and 16.

“Dioramas of December” will be featured, where participants can create a fantasy world for pixies and fairies using a variety of sculpting and painting materials.

The cost for the three classes is $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers.

St. Paul’s preschool to host fundraiser

St. Paul’s Lutheran Preschool is holding its 11th annual enchilada fundraiser.

The cheese or cheese and onion enchiladas are packed fresh in a container with wax paper between each layer and a 12 ounce cup of sauce on the side. The enchiladas freeze well, and the sauce is from Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant. The cost is $10 per dozen.

All proceeds are used to benefit local children with scholarships, field-trip opportunities, updated materials and capital improvements. St. Paul’s is a nonprofit organization.

Animas High School to host Power Lunches

Animas High School will host monthly Power Lunches for students to meet and hear from professionals in the community about resources, professions, experiences and more.

The next lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 and parents are invited. AHS will host aerospace engineer Paul Romere.

District 9-R accepting board applications

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education is accepting applications from people living in Director District A and District D who are interested in serving on the Board of Education from the date of appointment until the regular biennial school election in November 2015.

A candidate must have been a resident of the school district for the last 12 months, be a registered voter of the school district and be a current resident of Director District A or D.

Boundary maps of districts A and D are available at durangoschools.org or from the 9-R Superintendent’s Office in the Central Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.

People interested in serving must file a letter of interest with the board clerk by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The letter should include qualifications and reasons for applying and should be submitted to Jane Schold, Board Clerk, 201 E. 12th St., Durango, CO, 81301 or emailed to jschold@durango.k12.co.us.
