Durango 9-R schools to close for Veterans Day

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

DHS winter sports to begin Nov. 13

Durango High School winter sports that include boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling will begin Nov. 13.

The Activities Office will accept paperwork and participation fees for these sports through Tuesday. A red card must be issued to each athlete in order to be cleared to participate on Nov. 13.

The winter parent, athlete and coach meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the main gym.

9-R schools to host Thanksgiving meals

Durango School District 9-R elementary schools will host their Thanksgiving meals at these times:

Animas Valley Elementary: kindergarten and first grade from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20; second- and third grades from 11:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grades from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary: prekindergarten to second grade at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 22; and third to fifth grade at 12:15 p.m.

Park Elementary: preschool and kindergarten from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Nov. 21; first grade from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; second grade from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; third grade from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grade from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Riverview Elementary: preschool at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 21; kindergarten at 11 a.m.; first grade at 11:20 a.m.; second grade at 11:40 a.m.; third grade at noon; fourth grade at 12:15 p.m.; and fifth grade at 12:30 p.m.

Sunnyside Elementary: preschool and kindergarten at 11 a.m. Nov. 22; first and fifth grade at 11:15 a.m.; and second, third and fourth grade at noon.

Lunch will be $4 for adults and $2.45 for children.

Animas Valley to host Turkey Trot

Animas Valley Elementary School will host a Turkey Trot on Nov. 20 with these events:

The fourth and fifth grades will have a song at 10:10 a.m. in the gym.

The warm-up for the Turkey Trot will take place at 10:20 a.m.

The Turkey Trot for kindergarten to second grade will be held from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the soccer field.

The Turkey Trot for third to fifth grades will take place from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the Nature Trail.

The Turkey Trot will end at 10:45 a.m.

Fort Lewis Mesa to host Turkey Trot

The Thanksgiving celebrations at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will begin Nov. 22 with an orchestra presentation at 10 a.m. in the gym, followed by a Turkey Trot at 10:15 a.m.

Education foundation changes name

The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence has opted to change its name to the Durango Education Foundation.

The Durango Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 charity that has served Durango School District 9-R schools since 1984. The only nonprofit entity raising funds for all 9-R schools, the foundation also works with community organizations to bring effective, exciting programs into the schools.

Programs the foundation has supported this year range from Durango High School robotics to library materials at Needham, Animas Valley and Sunnyside elementary schools. The Escalante Common Read program this year is funded by the foundation, as are the new teaching cameras in the DHS photography department.

Baccalaureate program to be discussed

Miller Middle School and Atlas at Durango High School will host “Coffee, Tea, and IB (International Baccalaureate)” from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Nov. 19 in Room 173 at Miller Middle School.

Participants will be able to hear what the IB program is doing, ask questions and raise concerns. Light refreshments will be served.

Riverview Elementary to collect cellphones

In honor of Veterans Day, Riverview Elementary School is collecting used cellphones through Nov. 29.

When people donate to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, they provide troops with free calling cards to stay connected with their loved ones.

People may deliver cellphones to the school, 2900 Mesa Ave.

Continuing education available at FLC

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will host these courses:

“Learn to Play Guitar in a Day!” with Marlene Hutchinson will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16. The one-day workshop is for adults, who will learn basic chords, simple strumming, picking patterns and more. Participants should bring an acoustic guitar. The cost for a workbook and Snark clip-on electronic tuner is $30 payable in class to the instructor. The cost for the workshop is $84.

“Basic Digital Photography” will be offered by Paul Boyer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16. This is a basic course for people who want to become familiar with the functions of digital cameras. Topics will include how cameras work, selecting settings for best image quality, downloading photos to computer and possibilities for presenting images to friends and family. The cost is $74 for one class.

Liberty School announces events

The Liberty School, 215 E. 12th St., will host a Visitor’s Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14.

The school also is now accepting dyslexic, gifted or twice-exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) students for current year enrollment.

There will be no school Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

FLC announces club officers

Fort Lewis College’s Dr. Terry R. Bacon Leadership Center, which assists students in creating clubs and organizations that reflect their interests and passions, announces these new officers:

Eliott Phillips of Durango was elected the vice president of PRISM.

Lucas Matney of Durango was elected treasurer of PRISM.

Kaylyn LeClaire of Durango was elected president of Wanbli Ota.

Denise Espinosa of Pagosa Springs was elected secretary of Wellness Peer Advisory Council.
