Park Elementary School to celebrate Veterans Day
The students of Park Elementary School will host a special musical performance in honor of Veterans Day from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
They are also preparing a banner to present to the Durango VFW. All veterans are welcome.

Mountain Middle School is accepting Intent to Enroll forms for the fourth and fifth grades for the 2017-18 school year. This is for students who are now in second- and third-grade. Forms are available at www.mountainmiddleschool.org or by calling 828-5600.
Sixth-grade humanities students will host an “Alice in Wonderland” exhibition and book release party from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 18 in the ballroom at Fort Lewis College Student Union. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s imagination and classic books, each sixth-grader has created a personal project that reflects his or her own sense of Alice’s adventures.
Destination Imagination expands students’ minds
San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services will host several Destination Imagination informational meetings for parents, students, teachers and community volunteers.
Destination Imagination is a program for students from prekindergarten to 12th grade that fosters creative problem solving, teamwork and critical and divergent thinking skills. The program challenges students to tackle problems across multiple areas of interest, including architecture, art, theater, music, engineering, physics, mathematics and more.
Meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and Nov. 30 in the board room of the Durango School District 9-R Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.

The Durango School District 9-R School Board meeting has been rescheduled to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the district office, 201 E. 12th St.

The Durango School District 9-R district office has modified hours over Thanksgiving break.
The district office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 25. The office will be closed on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27.

Needham Elementary selling local coupon book
Needham Elementary School is taking orders for the 2016 Be Local Coupon Book.
The books are $20 each. People can order them through a Needham student or at the Needham school office through Nov. 20. Pre-payment is required. Books will be available for pickup the first week in December.

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will host its annual Turkey Trot and lunch Nov. 18.
The Turkey Trot will begin at 10 a.m. Lunch will be held after the run.

Dave Heerschap’s advanced physics students will test out the handcrafted, large trebuchets they have designed and constructed in teams at the second annual AHS Punkin Chunkin competition in Twin Buttes. The competition will begin at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and will continue until dusk (or until the pumpkins run out). Attendees should park at the Twin Buttes barn and garden entrance, west of the AHS entrance.
The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the AHS Commons. All are welcome. Minutes and agendas are posted at http://animashighschool.com/board-meetings.
Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave., will showcase student photography from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, including work from 10 AHS students.

Animas High student to sing at Carnegie Hall
Aidyn Andreatta-Hankins, a student at Animas High School, has been selected for the 2016 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. She will perform first alto during Carnegie Hall’s 125th anniversary season in February with the Honors Women’s Choir.
Andreatta-Hankins auditioned for the Honors Performance Series and was accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board. Acceptance to the group is a direct result of the talent, dedication and achievements demonstrated in her application and audition recording.
Finalists will come together in New York City for five days in February 2016. They will have the opportunity to learn from world-renowned conductors.

World Heritage Student Exchange Programs is looking for families to host boys and girls between 15 and 18 years old from a variety of countries.
The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. World Heritage students are selected based on academics and personality. Host families can choose their student from a variety of countries and personal interests.

Elks Lodge to explain scholarship applications
BPOE Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 will hold an open-house scholarship applicant review from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 30 at the lodge.
Seniors – public, private or home-schooled – who plan to apply for 2016 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student and Durango Elks Lodge scholarships are welcome to attend for a review of general application criteria for the scholarships.
The submission deadline for Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest applications is Dec. 4. A reception table will be set up in the lodge lobby from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 for those submitting a completed MVS application in person. Applications may also be mailed to the lodge and must reach the lodge no later than Dec. 4.
