Durango Arts Center to offer preschool classes

Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will offer preschool art class for children ages 3 to 5 with artist Ruth Bloom from 1 to 3 p.m. June 18, 19 and 20.

The cost is $25 for each class. Children will finger paint and monoprint with chocolate pudding, listen to a story by John Cage and Lois Long titled The Mud Book, draw with beeswax crayons, model with beeswax to create a sculpture and create a life-size self-portrait using a variety of materials.

Durango Arts Center announces summer camps

Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will host these art camps:

GOAL (Girls’ Opportunities through Arts and Leadership) for fifth- to eighth-grade girls from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday from June 3 to 13. The cost is $400. This program uses visual arts to address skills in relationships, personal identity, goal setting, problem solving and independent thinking. Applications are by nomination from an art teacher or other adult. Scholarships are available.

“Art Camps: Arting Around” for children ages 6 to 10 will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday from June 24 to 27. The cost is $180. Students will explore several art mediums, including papermaking, plaster casting, tile mosaics and painting with acrylics.

“Imagination Station” for children ages 5 to 7 will have three sessions from 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday from June 10 to 14, 17 to 21, and 24 to 28. The cost is $125. The camps will offer structured acting, movement and improvisation games. There will be different performance piece for each session.

“Families Together: An Intergenerational Theater Camp” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday from June 3 to 13 at Fort Lewis College. The camp is open to children ages 8 to 13. The cost is $450 and is designed to promote intergenerational storytelling by bringing grandparents and grandchildren together to share life stories. Parents are eligible to participate

“The Writer’s Room: Playwriting” for people ages 16 and older will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday from June 17 to 21. The cost is $180. This will be a hands-on process of generating new material for the stage, culminating in a public reading of one new play by each writer.

“Let’s Put on a Play: James and the Giant Peach” for children ages 8 to 12 will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday to Friday from June 24 to July 19. The cost is $500.

Liberty School to offer dyslexia, gifted testing

The Liberty School and Durango Rotary will sponsor testing for signs of dyslexia and giftedness today and Thursday at a reduced fee of $50.

Testing will be held at the school at 215 E. 12th St.

Cortez Cultural Center schedules day camps

Cortez Cultural Center and Hawkins Preserve will host summer day camps for children ages 6 to 12 beginning June 3.

Programs will include creative arts, beginning percussion, water and ecology, and environmental studies. Partial scholarships are available, and enrollment is limited.

Discovery museum announces programs

Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will offer these programs:

Minority task force seeking feedback

The Durango School District 9-R Minority Student Achievement Task Force is looking for parents to provide feedback about what supports are helping or hindering minority students’ academic success.

Riverview choir, orchestra to perform tonight

Riverview Elementary School’s choir and orchestra will perform their annual spring concert at 6:30 p.m. today in the Riverview gymnasium.

Students will perform choral pieces, Orff percussion works and selections from the Suzuki String School, Book I. Admission is free and the public is invited.

The Durango High School volleyball program will host the 34th annual volleyball camp June 5 and 6 at DHS.

Durango health center hosting brick campaign

The Durango School District 9-R School-Based Health Centers will host a brick campaign through May 31.

People may purchase one of two bricks, priced at $50 and $100. All profits will cover operations costs, such as salaries for health-care providers and supplies. All bricks will be engraved with a message of the patron’s choice and will be permanently displayed in the front entry of the health center.

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at Central Office, 201 E. 12th St.

The school of focus will be Sunnyside Elementary School.

The Big Picture Class of 2013 graduation commencement will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 30 at Rotary Park.

The Durango High School graduation commencement will be held at 7 p.m. May 31 at DHS.

Needham Elementary to host Scholastic book fair

Needham Elementary School’s Scholastic “Buy 1-Get-1-Free” Book Fair will be held today through Friday in the school’s library.

The book fair will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. today, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The community is invited.
