Ellen Southworth studies abroad

Bates student Ellen Southworth of Durango, spent the fall 2014 semester studying abroad in France at the Paris College of Art.

Southworth, a 2012 graduate of Durango High School, is the daughter of Scott A. Southworth and Robin L. Lucie of Durango. She is majoring in mathematics at Bates.

About 60 percent of Bates students study abroad, and the college offers access to academically rigorous and culturally enriching study-abroad programs in more than 80 countries.

Bates is located in Lewiston, Maine.

Rotary clubs donate dictionaries to 9-R

Each year as a joint club project, Durango’s three Rotary Clubs purchase, wrap and provide dictionaries to every third-grader in Durango School District 9-R.

The dictionaries will be delivered to 9-R classrooms by Rotarians.

The Rotary Club of Durango meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave. Visitors are welcome.

9-R students win coloring contest

Layla Kelly, first-grader, and Trey Goupil, kindergartener, both students at Florida Mesa Elementary School, won four tickets to the “Nutcracker” and a $25 gift certificate to Nature’s Oasis by participating in the Nutcracker coloring contest.

Luke Prince is FLC orientation leader

New Student and Family Orientation at Fort Lewis College welcomes more than 1,100 new students and more than 500 family members each fall.

Luke Prince, of Durango, was a crucial part of orientation programming as an orientation leader. Prince’s current major is marketing.
