Elizabeth Schell named to dean’s list
Elizabeth R. Schell was named to the dean’s list at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for her outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2013-14 year.
Schell, a member of the Class of 2014, is the daughter of Jeffrey and Lori Schell of Durango, and attended Durango High School.
Students whose grade-point averages were 3.7 or higher were named to the list.
DHS, Miller obtain IB status
Durango High School and Miller Middle School have obtained International Baccalaureate World School status after completing the application process and the required training and implementation of the program’s pedagogy at Miller Middle School and in the Atlas small learning community at DHS.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is a holistic approach for students aged 11 to 16 that helps them develop intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically.
The Middle Years Programme partnership authorization will add two more schools to the International Baccalaureate authorized school list for Durango School District 9-R, which already has three authorized elementary schools: Animas Valley, Florida Mesa and Needham.
The IB educational approach ensures a depth of understanding with a focus on math, science, humanities, language, technology, the arts and physical education and health.
As part of the authorization, IB teachers are required to regularly participate in a variety of professional development opportunities to update their knowledge and share their expertise with colleagues.
Durangoan graduates from Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, announces that it awarded Susan Lynn Dameron of Durango a doctorate in education.
Medicine Horse names scholarship winner
Medicine Horse Center announces this years Kathy K. Parr Scholorship recipient is Megan Farrah from Pagosa Springs.

DHS aerospace team to attend finals
The 14-member Durango High School competitive Aerospace Design Team has been invited to participate in the World Finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition to be held at Kennedy Space Center in late July.
The competition combines teams from throughout the world and poses a design challenge with only hours to solve, using the universal languages of physics and math. The DHS team has won this competition five times (2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2011).
The Durango Education Foundation gathered contributions from science education supporter Bill Mensch (Bill and Dianne Mensch Foundation) and StoneAge Tools founders John Wolgamott and Jerry Zink, then added money from the DEF Student Competition Travel Fund to meet the travel expenses. The extra money collected will help the team with 2014-15 school year programs and travel, as well.
