AHS enrollment now open for 2014-15

Animas High School announces these events:

Enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is open through 5 p.m. Feb. 28. Spots are available for ninth, 10th and 11th grade. Students interested in enrolling at AHS can find an online enrollment form at www.animashighschool.com. Current students do not need to enroll online. The main office will mail out registration packets to all current students.

There are numerous opportunities for potential students and their families to learn more about the school. Prospective students are invited to attend information nights from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today and Jan. 29 at the school.

Prospective students can shadow AHS students by making a reservation. To schedule a shadow experience, call 247-2474 or email mainoffice@animashighschool.com.

A freshman physics exhibition of Rube Goldberg chain reaction will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Durango Discovery Museum.

The annual AHS/Desert Sun Coffee Sale has begun. Students will come home with packets for the sale, and the goal is for each student to sell a minimum of six bags. The order deadline is Jan. 31. A Power Lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to noon Thursday. The Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center will visit to share information about the career options in the health-care field. The panel will include AHS parents and the center’s executive director, Kathleen McInnis.

Mountain Middle opens enrollment

Mountain Middle School has opened its enrollment registration period for the 2014-15 school year through Feb. 14.

To register a student, visit mountainmiddleschool.org under “enrollment.” Enrollment is limited. If interest exceeds the number of seats available, a lottery drawing will be held Feb. 26.

Gore Scholarship available to senior girls

The Dorothy Gore Scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CS is available to any La Plata County graduating senior girl who has shown academic promise and leadership potential, has served her community and has at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

This $1,000 scholarship honors Dorothy Gore, a longtime Durango teacher. All applicants to an academic college are considered, although priority is given to applicants to Cottey College, a two-year women’s college in Nevada, Mo., owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Information about Cottey is available online at www.cottey.edu. Applications for the scholarship are available at high school counseling offices.

The application deadline is March 7.

Continuing education available at FLC

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education program will offer these classes:

“Beginning Italian” will be offered by Paul Boyer on Monday and Wednesday evenings from Feb. 3 to April 2. This course is designed for beginning students as well as students who would like to refresh their abilities with the language. At the end of the course, participants should feel confident about getting off a plane in Italy, checking into a hotel and ordering food on the street or in a restaurant. The cost is $249 for 16 classes.

“Japanese Culture” will be taught by Scott Miller on Tuesday evenings from Feb. 4 to Feb. 25. Topics will include religion, samurai culture, geisha, traditional music and art, pop culture as well as the etiquette one needs to know before visiting Japan. In the final class, students will learn how to cook traditional Japanese cuisine and will have dinner and a tea ceremony hosted by Miller and his wife, Yuriko. The cost is $124 for four classes, including dinner.

DHS to host program for eighth-graders

Durango High School invites all eighth-grade students and their families to learn about the programs offered at DHS from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 3.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of elective options and decide which Small Learning Community is best: Atlas, Basecamp or DAVINCI.

Attendees also will receive an informational brochure, including a selection form and application, and will have a chance to speak to many of the teachers within each SLC.

SLC information nights also will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at Miller Middle School; and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Escalante Middle School.

Durango school board will meet Feb. 4

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in the board room of the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.

Miller Middle School will be the school highlight.

Durango School District to hold round tables

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will host a budget round table from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Escalante Middle School library.

During this session, participants can name programs they do not want supported and recommend how the school might reallocate money to support programs people do want to see in the school.

Durango to start boys transitional program

Durango School District 9-R is working with the community to develop an eighth-grade boys transitional program, similar to the Girls to Women conference run by the Women’s Resource Center.

The goal of the conference for all transitioning eighth-grade boys is to support students in their efforts to build positive self-images and strong relationships to help them succeed in high school and beyond.

A committee is currently working on developing the program for the conference, which is scheduled for May 8.

The next committee meeting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 in the District Office Conference Room.

Escalante collecting children’s books

Escalante Middle School is participating in a book drive with a goal of collecting more than 25,000 children’s books to be distributed to kids throughout Colorado.

The school will collect new or gently-used books, including Spanish-language books, through Jan. 31 in the front hall, where donations can be placed in the red box.

Books should be for children in the third grade or younger.

Health advisory council to meet Feb. 3

Durango School District 9-R will host an open meeting of the School Health Advisory Council from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the District Office Board Room, 201 E. 12th St.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for parents, students and community members to comment on the implementation of the Colorado Comprehensive Health Education standards.

The standards include topics such as nutrition, healthy relationships, sexual health, mental and emotional health, tobacco, alcohol, safety and violence prevention.

Park taking part in Readathon

Park Elementary School’s Safari Readathon, named Safar-A-Read, will be held from Jan. 27 to Feb. 5.

Information packets will come home in a student’s Friday Folder along with pledge materials and recording sheets.

The Parent Teacher Organization needs parent volunteers in the morning to count minutes and pass out awards daily. Any amount of time is helpful.

Special-education committee to meet

The Special Education Advisory Committee invites parents, educators and community members to join in learning more about advocating for students with special needs in the school system.
