Locals named outstanding students in majors at FLC

Fort Lewis College in Durango announced its second annual "Celebration of Academic Achievement," where departments choose one outstanding student from each major who exemplifies success in the field of study.

McKenzie Rayburn of Bayfield was chosen as the outstanding student for business administration.

Remington Ketchum of Bayfield was chosen as the outstanding student for physics.

Local students present at symposium

The Fort Lewis College School of Arts and Sciences held its annual Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities Symposium on Thursday, April 21. Student participants were selected by their departments to represent the best undergraduate research and performances done at Fort Lewis College this year, either in oral or poster presentations.

The presentations can be seen on the Fort Lewis College You Tube channel via the archived live streams of the Morning & Afternoon sessions.

Tori Gosney of Bayfield presented "Environmental stressors: the effects of ambient noise on child development in rural and urban areas," with supervision from faculty mentor Amy Concilio. Gosney's major is environmental studies.

R. Spencer Ketchum of Bayfield was part of a team that presented "An experimental and modeled comparison of diffraction in imaging systems," with supervision from faculty mentor Megan Paciaroni. Ketchum's major is physics.

Chelsea Wilmer of Bayfield was part of a team that presented "Determining Potential Glacial Refugia for Ostrya knowltonii across the Southwestern US as Inferred Through Chloroplast Haplotype Analysis," with supervision from faculty mentor Ross McCauley. Wilmer's major is biology.

Students earn math recognition at Fort Lewis College

Local students were recognized by Fort Lewis College's Freshman Math Program for success and perseverance in introductory mathematics courses.

Sarah Aamot of Bayfield was honored with the College Algebra Outstanding Student Award. This award is for students who consistently demonstrate high quality in all work and attitude. Aamot's major is art.

Lona Nopah of Bayfield was honored with the Introduction to Algebra HOPE Award. This award is for students who demonstrate hard work, have possibly overcome obstacles, have shown persistence, and have high expectations, as evidenced by exponential growth throughout the term. Nopah also received the DRIVE Award, given to the students who frequently visit the Algebra Alcove and whose performance demonstrates qualities of being disciplined, ready, independent, visionary and enthusiastic/eager. Nopah's major is sociology and human services.

Scott Rahilly of Ignacio was honored with the College Algebra Outstanding Student Award. This award is for students who consistently demonstrate high quality in all work and attitude. Rahilly's major is interdisciplinary studies.
