We had our reservations about Jared Polis in the governor’s race last fall. Now that he is the governor, some have been eased by his conduct on matters of policy.
He is not the radical progressive some feared (and some no doubt hoped for). He is more pragmatic and libertarian. He is also getting done some of the things he set out to do, thanks to Democratic majorities in both state houses, yet he quailed at measures aimed at making it harder for parents to opt out of vaccinations for their children and making Colorado a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants.
In short, he yet may be another Hickenlooper: a little idiosyncratic, a little centrist and very Coloradan. The point is, we are still reserving judgment.
Not so some Colorado Republicans, who are ginning up another recall effort, this time aimed at him.
On Thursday, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported that effort is entering “a new phase,” with a statewide petition drive that could begin as soon as July 8, marking six months of Polis in the state office.
We do not see much chance of this succeeding. It strikes us more as foolishness on several counts. Polis may stumble going forward, but of course, for the sake of Colorado, we hope he does not. In the meantime, why not give him a chance to do good?
