Climate change threatens every aspect of our way of life in Durango. Whether it’s biking our trails, kayaking our rivers or skiing our mountains, these treasured pastimes depend on a healthy climate.
That’s why I’m supporting Holly Metzler (District 1), Terry Greiner (District 2), Joe Lewandowski (District 3) and John Witchel (District 4) in the upcoming La Plata Electric Association board election.
LPEA has already taken bold steps to reduce emissions and modernize our energy system. By choosing to leave Tri-State, a power provider locked into decades of coal and fossil fuels, LPEA is freeing our co-op from an outdated, polluting 50-year contract. This decision allows us to pursue more diverse, cleaner power sources – like rooftop solar, local solar farms and new technologies that increase efficiency and resilience.
Importantly, this transition isn’t just good for the climate – it’s good for our wallets. By entering into a bridge contract with Mercuria through 2029, LPEA has secured a 10% rate reduction for its members. That’s real savings, alongside real environmental progress.
Metzler, Lewandowski and Witchel have each demonstrated thoughtful, climate-conscious leadership as board members. Along with them, Greiner understands the urgency of the moment and is committed to putting our co-op on a path that ensures a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone in La Plata County.
Vote online through SmartHub by noon or return your ballot by 4 p.m. May 20. Let’s elect board members who will protect our environment and secure clean, affordable energy for the long haul.
Thank you for your help.
