Clinton leads in race for most donations
WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton is dominating the money hunt in the presidential campaign. She’s collecting more big-dollar contributions than any candidate in either party among 26 states.
An Associated Press review finds that Republican Ben Carson was the second-best fundraiser in 10 states among those who gave at least $200 this election cycle. The retired neurosurgeon is ahead of former Republican Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida.
Some candidates draw most of their campaign money from small donations. But Clinton’s larger checks underscore her fundraising advantage among generous donors important to expensive campaigns.
The 22 major presidential candidates have raised $274 million so far for their official campaigns – not counting money from super PACs that can raise unlimited dollars.
Obama says debate shows party’s unity
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says Democratic presidential candidates showed in their debate that the party is largely unified on the economy, climate change and other big issues.
Obama says he watched some of Tuesday’s debate but was flipping between that and baseball playoff games. He says he was impressed by the candidates but isn’t yet taking sides.
CNBC reaches deal on next GOP debate
NEW YORK – CNBC and the Republican presidential candidates agreed Friday on the format for the third debate, a day after Donald Trump and Ben Carson threatened to boycott unless they got their way, the network said.
The Oct. 28 debate will be two hours long and include closing statements from the participating candidates, said Brian Steel, CNBC spokesman.
In a joint letter to CNBC’s Washington bureau chief Thursday, the billionaire businessman and retired neurosurgeon told the hosting network they would not appear at the Oct. 28 debate unless it was capped at two hours and the candidates were allowed to speak directly to the camera at its opening and close.
