Electric vehicle tax credit is still needed

I would like to thank our state representative, Barbara McLachlan, for helping to vote down HB 47, which would have prematurely eliminated the tax credit for alternative fuel vehicles, including increasingly popular electric vehicles (EVs).

Like many people, we could afford only an economical car. Because of the Colorado and federal tax credits, we were able to buy a plug-in hybrid electric car for about $20,000. The car is also very economical to drive and maintain. This is good for Colorado, as we use the money that would have been spent on imported petroleum to spur the local economy instead.

Anyone who can afford a car can afford an electric vehicle. This tax credit was updated two years ago with strong bipartisan support. Rep. McLachlan understands that the tax credit is working and is still needed.

Colorado is now one of the five fastest growing EV markets in the country, and soon this technology that keeps our air cleaner will be cost competitive.
