Elementary school Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon events to be held in May

Jonah Ooley rides his bike in 2015 at Needham Elementary School as part of the Walk-n-Roll parade.

Durango will host “Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon” events May 8-12 at Needham Elementary School, 2425 West Third Ave., and Park Elementary School, 510 East Sixth Ave., as a part of the Safe Routes to School program.

The week will kick-off with a bike rodeo May 5 at Park Elementary and end with a bike rodeo and “walk-n-roll” parade May 12 at Needham Elementary.

Students are encouraged to walk, bike, bus or carpool to school during the week.

Bike rodeos will include bicycle skills tests, rock dodging and other drill stations with the Durango Police Department; mini bike tunes and inspections by Durango DEVO; a presentation by Gray Matters Helmet Program from Mercy Regional Medical Center about helmet-fittings and bike-safety demonstrations, and a bike safety station. Prizes will be offered from local businesses, such as Second Avenue Sports, Brown’s Sport Shoe and Osprey Packs, and the city of Durango.

A neighborhood meeting will be 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 11 in the multipurpose room at Needham Elementary School to review and discuss plans for the upcoming Needham Connect II sidewalk project.
