Our elected officials have been overwhelmed by the issue of homelessness exacerbated by the closure of Purple Cliffs. However, the best solution has been in front of their noses for at least a year if only our representatives can make the hard decision that benefits the most citizens and impacts the least.
The site known variously as Elk View or near Greenmount Cemetery is clearly the location that impacts the fewest people and benefits the most.
The reduction of the “fears of impact” on the neighbors must be borne by our officials to ensure that those fears and concerns are never realized. Fear stands for “false expectations appearing real.” Doubters need to recognize that 98% of the campers are struggling to get jobs, become clean and sober, and overcome poverty, and the remainder are in the sights of the caregivers of law enforcement. The statistics do not justify the fear!
Agencies are already doing a great job providing assistance and support.
Elk View is removed from larger, more populous neighborhoods within easy walking access to transportation and town, and centered near supporting resources, including Manna, Espero, Hillcrest, the Halfway House, VOA shelters, San Juan Basin Health, NINA and Community Compassion Outreach.
I understand the challenges for those whose neighborhood could be impacted. A well-managed campus, however, could ameliorate the challenges, giving the neighbors a sense that they have truly helped their fellow man in a time of grave need.
