Ellen Roberts’ water bill is positive step

I am writing to thank our state Sen. Ellen Roberts for recently co-sponsoring Senate Bill 8, which promotes water conservation in land-use planning. The bill provides free, voluntary training programs to land-use professionals on best practices for outdoor water use and adds to our toolbox for building public awareness around sustainable ways to manage water.

Water is an increasingly critical issue for the Western Slope of Colorado, and we, as individuals, as a municipality and as a region, need to continue to move toward greater efficiency. Wise use of our water resources is crucial for increased resilience as water availability and access grows more and more competitive, due to population growth, increased demand and climatic factors. Though this voluntary measure is not binding, SB 8 is a step in the right direction, and I commend Roberts for signing on to this initiative, in hopes that she will continue to be a leader in advocating for water conservation on behalf of our region. We are in dire need of wise legislation for smart water use and a way forward in land-use planning that looks into the future, especially in regards to the most precious of our resources: our water.
