Endorsement did not require insults

The Herald’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton comes as no surprise since the paper’s politics are well established. However, I don’t understand why the Herald cannot make the argument without resorting to name calling and personal insults. “A con man who gets all dewey-eyed (sic) over dictators ... a lunatic ... unqualified to handle sharp objects.”

Why not express your opinions in a professional manner? I’m no fan of Donald Trump, but apparently about 40 percent of the voters are, else he wouldn’t be the Republican nominee.

Hillary condescendingly refers to them as a “basket of deplorables” and “irredeemable.” The Herald states “The very notion he is on the ballot is an insult to our democracy.” Can Hillary expect support from this significant number of Americans she so clearly disdains?

Likewise, can the Herald afford to alienate a significant portion of its readership with condescending editorials?
