Endorsement of incumbents disappoints

I was deeply disappointed by the Herald’s indiscriminate generic endorsement of all LPEA incumbents in this important election. While re-electing Britt Bassett is a must, the Herald’s endorsement of Kohler McInnis in my District 2 area is unsupportable.

The price of clean renewable energy has dropped far below the cost of dirty fossil fuels, and supporting Tri-State’s continued insistence on limiting LPEA’s use of local renewable energy, while favoring coal-produced power, not only damages Durango’s climate and health and sends jobs and money out of our community, but costs us far more for our energy use.

Sitting as he does on the Tri-State board, Kohler McInnis has shown us that he will put Tri-State’s interests ahead of the interests of the constituents in LPEA’s District 2 as he did last year when, after voting in the April LPEA board meeting to ask Tri-State to raise the 5 percent cap on locally produced energy to 10 percent, he then voted against the proposal at the Tri-State board meeting.

Kohler McInnis position on the Tri-State board is an inherent conflict of interest with his duties to District 2 LPEA residents. We need an open-minded, forward-thinking LPEA board that will pursue the best course forward to a clean, reliable and cost-effective energy future. I am voting for Jeff Mannix, a man of deep integrity who will always put our interests first. I urge all District 2 residents to do the same.
