Epstein dives to a pair of conference titles

Durango High School alumna Ruby Epstein (2018) won a pair of gold medals diving at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship for the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Feb on Saturday and Sunday. Epstein won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter diving conference championships, at California Lutheran University.

In the women’s 3-meter dive, Epstein averaged 45.89 points per dive, finishing with a total of 445.80 points to come from behind and edge past second-place Sydney Patterson from Redlands (441.90).

Epstein claimed her second dive title Sunday in the 1-meter competition with a total score of 467.15 points, beating Patterson of Redlands again by 43.15 points

After a yearlong hiatus from competitive diving because of COVID, Epstein came back this season and earned the No.1 seed for both events at the conference championships.

Epstein has also been selected as the SCIAC Athlete of the Week three times during the 2021-22 season. She will next compete in the NCAA regional championships in San Antonio Feb. 25-26.

Epstein began diving under coach Mark Fleming with the Durango Diving Club and Durango High School as a freshman at the 1-meter height and began competing in the 3-meter class in college. She will graduate from Pomona College in December with a degree in cognitive science with a computer science concentration and a minor in economics.
