Qualifying for the state golf tournament as only a freshman was a win for Faith Mewmaw.
The Animas High School student who represented Durango at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Girl Golf Championships at Pueblo Country Club was well out of contention after the first day, so the second day was a chance to continue to soak up experience during her young golf career.
Mewmaw finished her second round 47-over-par and finished 93-over for the tournament to finish last out of 85 golfers in the field.
Erin Sargent of Silver Creek won the tournament at 6-over with back-to-back rounds of 74 on the par-71 course. Caroline Jordaan of Colorado Academy finished second only one stroke back after rounds of 76 and 74, and Kelsey McKenna of Air Academy was third at 13-over.
Colorado Academy ran away with the team championship at 39-over 468. Cheyenne Mountain took second but finished well behind Colorado Academy. The Indians shot a 91-over 520 for the tournament.
Rifle finished third at 117-over 546.
Dolores’ Kiselya Plewe finished in a tie for fourth with Colorado Academy’s Kacey Godwin. Both girls finished the tournament at 14-over. Plewe shot rounds of 79 and 79.
The Durango Demons will return their entire roster from this year’s varsity girls golf team. Mewmaw will take her added state experience and apply it to her sophomore campaign.
