Explore a new political direction in August

I’m committed to this country, our Constitution and Bill of Rights and the principles of democracy, but troubled by our undemocratic elections and how our political parties have been co-opted by money and special interests.

I am also concerned about how few folks educate themselves about issues, vote, and get involved. At 73, I’ve figured out where I stand; Trump’s election has helped me do that.

We can champion democracy (a political system) but not believe capitalism is the best economic system. Yep! Since the election, I’ve been reading, thinking, listening to folks with differing views, getting involved (signing petitions, calling elected officials, joining Indivisible Durango, attending public meetings and demonstrations).

Have you ever heard of democratic socialism? It has nothing to do with fascism, communism or limiting freedom. It’s not a political party, but a movement focused on creating real democracy right where we live.

It takes into account real issues: jobs, environment, climate change, equality, justice, health care, student loans, race, class, immigration, gender, women’s issues, peacemaking and education. Maybe you’re interested in a few of these? There’s room for you in democratic socialism.

The Democratic Socialists of America’s annual convention is in Chicago during the first week of August. And I want to find four or more La Plata County folks to join me and travel together (by Amtrak or car), get to know each other and have fun.

Take a look at this site: dsausa.org (and the convention at dsaconvention.org). This is superb example of translating beliefs into action, making it possible for anyone to attend. If you are interested, contact me at suzannebirthing@gmail.com.
