In an Aug. 7 Herald story, the “city” is quoted as saying that the “Arc” sculpture at the entrance to Durango was a total loss valued at $28,000.
After looking at the damage done to the piece and consulting an art restoration expert, I do not believe that is true. Almost anything can be repaired, and while the shape of the missing rocks might not be exact, I am certain the artist has enough photographs that could make it possible to come reasonably close. Certainly, the cost would be high to restore the piece, but if, as the story also says, the city has a $5,000 deductible and then is going to be faced with paying the artist another $28,000 to replace the piece, restoration might be the answer. I really doubt anyone is going to notice a few misshaped rocks!
Almost any kind of artwork, from paintings to marble statues and even the Sistine Chapel, have successfully been restored. It might not be as easy as it is to call the artist and order something new, but if you actually want the sculpture, it makes sense to explore that option.
