'Explore Space: A Cosmic Journey' coming to Ignacio library

Ignacio Community Library is excited to announce the arrival of "Explore Space: A Cosmic Journey" in late August.

The exhibit will include a variety of fun and interactive experiences for patrons of all ages. The traveling exhibition for libraries is part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute.

The schedule of events starts this month and runs through October.

Grand opening, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31

This will be a night not to miss.

Learning our Night Sky, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7

Explore space with local expert John Buting, who will lead us through an evening of observing the Colorado night sky.Telescopes and binoculars will be available.

Rockets, Landers and Rovers, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14

Participants will explore space by learning about rockets, landers, rovers, and all things spacecraft.

Exploring our Solar System, 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17

The San Juan SkyGazers will be at ICL teaching about our solar system with the aid of the Explore Space exhibit. The program is appropriate for all children K-12

Learn the Planets storytime, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21

A fun storytime for the whole family to learn about the solar system with huggable planets.

Cosmic journey and family literacy night, 5:30 p.m. Monday Sept. 26

Dinner and a story with your kids. We will be introduced to the wonders of the cosmos.

Learn about constellations and create your own.

Mars and the Lagoon Nebula, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28

Once darkness sets in, Mars will make it a convenient marker for training backyard telescopes on the 4,000 light-year-distant Lagoon Nebula. The two celestial objects will appear less than 1 degree apart, making them easily fit inside the same field of view in both binoculars and telescopes.

Deep Sky Visitors, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5

Let's journey deep into the sky to learn about what is in outer space. You will make things to take home from the sessions.

International Observe the Moon Night, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8

InOMN is an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation , appreciation, and understanding of the moon.

Explore Space from Your Computer, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11

Learn all the ways to learn about space from your computer, tablet, or phone.

Finding the Goldilock Zone, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18

Join us as we hunt for alien Earth-like planets in far-off galaxies. This can be done by looking for the habitable zone, or Goldilocks Zone, where conditions are right for liquid water.
