After dropping its first game on Sunday, the Fort Lewis College softball team rallied to run-rule Colorado School of Mines 11-2 to end the weekend with a win.
Fort Lewis is now 6-23 overall and 6-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is 10-18, 10-8.
Mines won the first game Sunday 12-1, and Saturday’s games 9-7 and 7-0.
Fort Lewis’ bats came alive in Game 2 Sunday with the group stringing together five hits in the third inning to go up 5-0. Cat Rodman kick-started the scoring surge with an RBI single that scored Sloan Shotton from third. Katie Pippel followed with a double to score a pair, making it 3-0. Cara Daugherty and Jadyn Gilley followed with a triple and double, respectively, giving the Skyhawks a 5-0 lead. Mines got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle.
The Skyhawks loaded the bases in the fourth with a pair of two-out walks and an Oredigger error. Sydney Stewart then drew a bases-loaded walk to give Fort Lewis a 6-1 lead. Daugherty followed with a hit by pitch to extend the lead to 7-1. Gilley then sliced her second double of the game down the left-field line to score two and give FLC a 9-1 edge.
The Orediggers dug deep and plated a run to keep the game going at 9-2.
Fort Lewis’ defense limited the damage, but the team needed to pick up an extra run to end things early. Shotton was up for the task and belted her first long ball of the year over the right-field fence. FLC added another run after Stewart singled to left, making it 11-2.
Fort Lewis’ defense continued to work behind starting pitcher Amiee Shanks, picking up three-straight ground-outs to close the door on Mines.
The Skyhawks will be home this weekend, facing UCCS for a four-game series starting at noon on Saturday.
