October in the Four Corners brings out many bright and colorful leaves on the trees for display.
Now that the Fort Lewis College school year is in full swing, the arts on the rim are in full display as well. The performances and exhibits will show how excited everyone on campus is to share great experiences with the community.
The Fort Lewis College Theatre Department will present its first production of the season. “You Can’t Take it With You” is an uproarious comedy by Kaufman and Hart. It’s a simple story of boy meets girl, boy meets girl’s wacky family, boy loses girl and boy’s parents spend a night in jail (after the G-Men raid the house). A show for all ages, the FLC Theatre production plays Oct. 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and October 20 at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at www.durangoconcerts.com, the downtown ticket office and at the theatre box office one hour before show time. A great opportunity to learn about the show is to visit the Theatrically Speaking lecture given by the director, Felicia Lansbury Meyer, at Open Shutter Gallery at 6 p.m. Oct. 9.
The Music Department has two exciting performances to highlight for October. The first is the Jazz Ensemble performance at the VFW center on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The Jazz Ensemble continues its tradition of performing swing music with a special event on the Fort Lewis College Homecoming Weekend. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the VFW to support the “Uplift a Veteran” project.
The other exciting performance will be the first Concert Band and Concert Choir performance of the year at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Community Concert Hall. These two groups are the largest ensembles in the Music Department. Dr. Charissa Chiavaralloti, director of choral activities, and Dr. Marc Reed, Director of the concert band, have prepared a rewarding concert of traditional and contemporary works for their respective ensembles.
The Community Concert Hall will be in full swing in October with an amazing performance at the top of the month with Canadian Brass on Wednesday. The Canadian Brass is one of the world’s most respected brass quintets. Their vast repertoire highlights music from Baroque to jazz and marches to Broadway. After four decades, this group continues to be the absolute pinnacle of brass performance. On Oct. 23, singer/songwriter Jonny Lang will perform in the concert hall.
This creative blues singer blends the past with fresh ideas to generate his own fresh sound. Finally, on Oct. 26, comedian Jim Breuer brings his off-the-wall comedy and loveable personality to the Four Corners.
The Department of Art and Design will present a new exhibit, Juanita Ainsley: “Spinning Tales.” This exhibit will open with a reception Oct. 18 and remain on display through Nov. 20. The gallery provides exposure to diverse works of art and ranges of artistic expression representing multiple art forms, styles, periods, purposes and locales. This latest exhibit will be no exception.
The students, faculty and staff are all continuing great work on campus. After taking a drive to enjoy the autumn leaves, head up to campus to experience some wonderful fine arts.
