Fall sports seasons ready to begin

DHS golf and tennis teams will compete this week

For most fall sports teams, the season is just around the corner.

Besides high school boys golfers, who were able to start practicing last Monday, the seasons for almost everybody will begin on Monday.

High school football, softball, volleyball, cross-country, boys soccer and boys tennis teams can all begin officially practicing on Monday. Several competitions are also scheduled for next week.

The DHS boys golf team will compete Tuesday in Cortez at the Conquistador Golf Course.

The DHS boys tennis team will begin its season at the Vail Tennis Tournament on Friday and Saturday with matches against Colorado Academy, Vail, Aspen and Basalt

DHS volleyball, fresh off a trip to last year’s Class 4A state tournament, will scrimmage at Pagosa Springs on Aug. 12, along with Ignacio. DHS will play its first official match at Bayfield on Aug. 22. Ignacio will also play its opener on Aug. 22 at home against Montezuma-Cortez.

The Boggy Draw Bear Chase on Aug. 19 in Dolores, meanwhile, will be the first cross-country meet for DHS, Ignacio and Bayfield.

DHS soccer, which went undefeated during the regular season last year, will kick things off Aug. 19 at home against Mitchell.

Bayfield boys soccer will begin Aug. 24 at Alamosa.

The Durango softball team, which includes players from all over the region, will play its first game on Aug. 15 at home against Alamosa.

Football teams will be among the last to compete. Ignacio is the first football team scheduled to play. The Bobcats will play Aug. 19 at home against North Fork. Durango’s opener is scheduled for Aug. 25 against Farmington in Farmington. Bayfield will also play its first game Aug. 25 on the road at San Juan, Utah. Fort Lewis College will begin Sept. 2 at William Jewell College in Missouri.

The FLC men’s soccer team has home scrimmages scheduled for Aug. 19, 20 and 26 before its first official game Aug. 31 at home versus Lubbock Christian.

FLC women’s soccer will first play Sept. 2 against Eastern New Mexico in Alamosa, then stick around to play Adams State on Sept. 4.

FLC cross-country will also begin in Alamosa at the Joe Vigil Invitational on Sept. 9
