False alarm sends police to school

Panic button pushed twice inadvertently
Durango police arrived at Miller Middle School in several patrol cars Wednesday morning after a panic alarm was activated. It was a false alarm.

Two panic alarms that sounded at Miller Middle School about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday morning sent police rushing to the campus – all for nothing as it turned out.

A substitute secretary in the office inadvertently bumped a panic button with her knee twice, Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman Julie Popp said.

When the substitute didn’t answer Miller’s main phone number, authorities were doubly concerned. Popp didn’t know why the phone wasn’t answered.

All district schools and the district office have panic buttons in strategic locations that can be pressed in emergencies, Popp said. The alarms communicate directly with law enforcement.

Popp said the number and location of the panic buttons aren’t divulged.
