Family in crash is ID’d

Durango Fire Protection District firefighters work to free a child who is pinned after a Chevrolet Tahoe slammed into a traffic light pole at U.S. Highway 160/550 and River Road near The Home Depot. Four people were transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center. The SUV was southbound on the highway when it swerved to miss a vehicle that turned in front of it.

Police provided few details Wednesday about a car crash that sent four family members to the hospital Tuesday night.

The crash occurred about 7:25 p.m. on South Camino del Rio at the Home Depot intersection. A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado heading northbound into Durango turned left on to River Road in front of the 2001 Chevy Tahoe traveling southbound.

Durango Police Department spokesman Ray Shupe identified the parents as driver Jason English, 33, and front-seat passenger Deaven English, 31, both of Durango.

He did not release the names of the children or any further information about the crash.

The children’s ages were 9 and 5.

On Wednesday night, police said the older boy was pinned in the car, and he had to be cut out by rescue workers with Durango Fire Protection District. The driver of the Tahoe swerved to avoid the collision and slid into a traffic light pole.

“All four received injuries, and the older boy was seriously injured, and they’re talking about flying him out,” Durango police Sgt. Bobby Taylor said Tuesday night.

The driver of the Silverado was identified as Farmington resident Jesus Gonzalez, 29, who was cited for making a left turn in front of oncoming traffic, careless driving causing bodily harm, driving with a suspended license and driving without proof of insurance. Mercy Regional Medical Center spokesman David Bruzzese said Jason English was treated and released. He had no information on Deaven English, and said he could not provide information about the condition of the children.
