Farago: We should not judge yesterday by today

I just finished reading Andy Gulliford’s article in the weekend edition (Herald, Oct. 21),

I want to thank Gulliford for this interesting and very thought-provoking essay. It made me think about everything going on in our country at this time and to see that there are two sides to this controversy. Unfortunately, while I understand the problem a little better, I haven’t a clue as to what the answer is.

Perhaps it lies somewhere in the fact that everything is constantly changing and that we need to go along with these changes. As the population changes in Richmond, Virginia, shouldn’t the new residents have a say in what they honor and what they don’t? Shouldn’t the old people be allowed to honor whomever they want to remember?

I just wish that these changes can be made in a more civil way, and that we realize that the old people who honored certain things came from a completely different time and different way of thinking.

We really shouldn’t be judging yesterday’s society with today’s standards or vice versa.
