The traffic lights at the base of Farmington Hill are coming down later this week.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said traffic signals will be removed between 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday.

“This work cannot be completed under live traffic, so crews will work safely to get this done as quickly as possible,” Nancy Shanks, spokeswoman for CDOT’s U.S. 550/160 Connection South project, said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Farmington Hill was closed July 14 immediately after CDOT opened a new U.S. Highway 550 route that connects with the Grandview Interchange.

CDOT advised intermittent traffic stops are planned Thursday evening and one- and two-lane closures are likely for traffic traveling east and west past the intersection at the base of Farmington Hill.

Eastbound and then westbound traffic will be stopped so traffic lights hanging over the highway can be removed.

CDOT said commuters should plan for travel delays or figure out alternate routes between 7 and 9 p.m.

The former Farmington Hill route will be decommissioned over the coming weeks, Lisa Schwantes, CDOT spokeswoman, said on July 12.

“As soon as the Farmington Hill junction was barricaded and closed to travel, crews immediately began staging equipment to rubble the asphalt surface and restore the hillside back to a natural state,” Schwantes said.
